GALLERY 66-05 - 2022 Africa Photo Safari - Kenya - 30 January-11 February, 2022.
Introduction - The 13-Day 2022 Kenya African Photo Safari conducted by professional photographer Jeff Wendorff began with our arrival at the Nairobi International Airport and met by Game Watchers Safari staff, who transported us to the privately-owned Manchusla House B&B located on the north outskirts of Nairobi. Days 01 and 02 - We relaxed there for 2 nights getting adjusted to the time zone changes while visiting local game centers to include the nearby Giraffe Centre and the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage for a private showing, where you can choose to adopt a baby elephant. Two of the highlights during our stay in Nairobi were a private viewing at the Flip-Flop Shop where old, discarded foam sandals are collected, shredded, re-glued and shaped into decorations for resale, and a fabulous sit-down lunch at the Karen Blixen Garden Restaurant before going to the elephant orphanage. Day 03 - After breakfast, it was an early morning departure flight from the Nairobi Wilson AP, flying NNE arriving at the Porini Rhino River Camp located near Mt. Kenya. The camp is located next to the Meru Rhino Sanctuary, known most for its white and black rhinos, and Meru National Park, made famous by the lion Elsa in the movie “Born Free.” Days 04 and 05 - After checking in, tent assignments and a buffet lunch, it was off to the bush for game drives the next 3 days photographing the many giraffes, elephants, cape buffalo, wildebeest, gazelles, wildlife birds and of course, white rhinos. Day 06 - On Day 06, we departed Rhino River Camp for the flight SW to the Porini Mara Camp located within the Ol Kinyea Conservancy, one of the 16 conservancies that make up the Maasi Mara National Reserve. Upon arrival and greetings by the camp crews at the local airstrip, we drove to the camp for some refreshments, lunch and tent assignments. Days 07 and 08 - The next 3 days included early morning game drives with field breakfasts in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy. You are allowed to drive off-road in the conservancy to better photograph the many cats, zebra, elephants, antelope and wildebeest herds, hippos and cape buffalo that populate the area with sundowners in the field and campfire socials back at camp each evening. Day 09 - On day 09, we drove NW by jeep arriving at the Porini Lion Camp on the private, lodging-limited Olare Motorogi Conservancy known for its many lion prides. After tent assignments and a buffet lunch, it was off to the bush for a game drive. Days 10 , 11 and 12 - For the next 3 days it was early morning game drives, field breakfasts, afternoon game drives, sundowners in the field, group dinners and evening fireside socials. The highlight of the trip was a single female lion taking down an Eland twice its size after being drug over 1,000 ft while trying to sever the hind leg tendons to take the animal down, then suffocating the beast by grasping its nostrils in her jaws. She called the pride to begin the feeding before the vultures, hyenas and jackals began to arrive. Great stuff. Day 13 - Our adventure ended with a return flight back to Wilson AP, a half-day stay at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel located at the Nairobi IAP for a late return flight back to the USA and our final destinations. Event Summary - The gallery contains photographs taken each day of the safari beginning with a schedule of that day’s activities, a map of where we went and photographs of the participants showing field conditions encountered, wild animals in their natural settings and just how close we got to the wildlife in our safari jeeps. The gallery provides a documentary of where we went, what we did and the photo opportunities each of us experienced. The four of us shared two jeeps, providing ample room to scoot about to either side and we had plenty of room to spread out all of our photo gear. All of us want to thank Jeff Wendorff for opportunity to be there to experience the excitement of wild animals and to photograph them up close and personal. We would also like to thank the Game Watchers Safari guides and drivers, who got us into position based on the best lighting conditions, safety considerations and intuition as to what the wildlife would be doing next so that we would be in the best position for a photographic moment. We were fortunate indeed and we all have got the photos to prove it…..JDT
