Introduction - The Fort Worth Zoo initially opened in 1909 with just an African lion, 2 bear cubs, an alligator, a coyote, a peacock and a few rabbits. The zoo was operated by the City of Fort Worth and later in 1939 by the Zoological Society. The zoo expanded in 1937 with the addition of Monkey Island, in 1949 the Sea Lion Pool, in 1960 the Serpentarium Exhibit, in 1970 the South American Mammal Exhibit, in 1980 with the Stork and Crane Exhibit and in 1990 with the Alligator Pool and Parrot Paradise Exhibits. In October 1991, the Fort Worth Zoological Association assumed management of the zoo under a contract with the city and the zoo expanded rapidly. In 1992 the World of Primates and Asian Falls, in 1993 the Raptor Canyon, Asian Rhino Ridge and an Education Center were added. In 1994 Flamingo Bay and a Komodo Dragon Exhibit were opened. In 1995 Insect City, in 1997 Meerkat Mound, in 1998 a Veterinary Center and in 1999 the Thundering Plains were added. The huge Texas Wild Exhibit featuring local wildlife exhibits and an entire frontier-era Texas Town was opened in 2001. In 2004 the Parrot Paradise display was opened, in 2005 the Great Barrier Reef Exhibit and in 2008 Penguin Bay were added. The original Serpentarium was replaced by the Museum of Living Art (MOLA) in 2010. The zoo is currently undergoing a major $100-million renovation to include an expanded African Savanna, an Elephant Springs viewing area, a new Hunters of Africa and Asian Predators Exhibit and a Forest and Jungle Animal Exhibit. GALLERY 52 - Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta - 2025 to 2002 - 16 Albums.

Background - The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta began its modest beginning in 1972 when 13 balloons launched from a shopping mall parking lot located in downtown Albuquerque, and since then has grown into an international, week-long event held at the custom-designed 365-acre Balloon Fiesta Park located north of the city just off the Alameda Boulevard Exit from I-25 every year during the 1st week in October. It is now the largest ballooning event in the world, the most photographed public event and the largest annual international event held in the United States. Balloons launch from the Fiesta Park’s 78-acre launch field, the size of 54 football fields, and guests are able to walk onto the field during the launch so long as they stay out of the way during the launch and assentation phases. Be sure to watch for the Zebras as they direct the crowd to step aside for a balloon launch and give the “thumbs up” authorization for each crew to launch when the pathway is clear.

Event Summary - The week-long event starts each morning before the sunrise with the Dawn Patrol, which are several balloons selected for the pre-dawn launch to check local wind patterns and launch conditions for that day’s activities and one balloon is selected to hang the US Flag to the playing of the Stars Spangled Banner during the launch. The Mass Assentation starts promptly at sunrise with up to 500 balloons launching in a 2-3 hour period lifting off in rows with the down-wind rows launching first. The wind patterns are unique to Albuquerque in that the upper winds flow counter to the surface winds allowing the balloons to track in a circular vertical pattern by lowering to catch the reverse winds and come back over the field. It’s a vertical spectacle with balloons everywhere you look. Of course, they have to eventually come down and the chase crews recover the balloons when they finally land. During the evening, the popular Evening Glow is a crowd favorite as the balloons fully inflate and remain stationary on the field and to the countdown of the public announcer narrator, the balloons twinkles by flickering the gas jets lighting up the balloons and glowing in the dark. After the Balloon Glow, there is the Afterglow Fireworks Show, which raps up each day, (ref: www.balloonfiesta.com/guest-quide)

GALLERY 50 - Yellowstone Winter Photography Workshop - 15-22 January, 2025

Introduction - A total of 6 people had signed up for the 2025 Yellowstone Winter Photography Workshop held from 15th to the 22nd of January, 2025 conducted by professional photographers Kathy Lichtendahl and Suzanne Mathia sponsored by Muench Workshops. The workshop began based out of the Absaroka Lodge located in the town of Gardiner, Mt along the northern border of the park and later in the week out of the Old Faithful Snow Lodge located within the park. Only 1 road is maintained open in the park in the wintertime mostly for park staff and that is the road from Gardiner to Mammoth Hot Springs and then east to Cooke City. Snow mobiles and tracked vehicles are allowed but must register entering the park and have a professional licensed guide. Day 01 - The workshop began with arrivals meeting at 1:00 pm at the Holiday Inn after arriving at the Bozeman airport for group transportation to our hotel in Gardiner. We entered the park on the Old Stagecoach Road following the Yellowstone River south to shoot wildlife and scenery along the way. We encountered a large herd of Bighorn Sheep crossing the road and a large group of Pronghorn Antelope in the valley below. Before checking into our hotel, we drove into the park the short distance up to the Mammoth Hot Springs overlook and encountered a large bull elk up close hanging out at Canary Springs. We returned and checked-into the hotel and met for a group dinner at a local restaurant there in Gardiner. Day 02 - We started with an early morning departure from our hotel in Gardiner arriving at the Mammoth Hot Springs Lodge for a quick box breakfast in the lounge, met our driver for the workshop, and loaded our travel bags onto a van for transport to the Old Faithful Lodge. We boarded our snow coach with our photo gear for our before sunrise game drive south into Yellowstone Park. We first stopped at Electric Peak for a sunrise shoot, then Warm Springs for wildlife, stopped at and photographed the steaming fumaroles at Roaring Mountain, encountered wildlife at Gibbon Meadows and photographed Trumpeter Swans along the Madison River. We stopped at the Fountain Paint Pots for images of geysers, mud pots and the frost, snow-covered foliage along the wooden boardwalk. We finally arrived at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge, picked up our transported luggage, checked-in and met for a group dinner at the lodge. Day 03 - After breakfast at the lodge, we departed heading east in a snowstorm for an early morning shoot at the West Thumb Geyser Basin, shot wildlife at the Fishing Bridge and entered Hayden Valley looking for wildlife along the way. We stopped at the scenic Artist’s Point and shot the icy shrouded Lower Falls of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The highlight of the day was spotting a wolf pack of 4 wolves along the road as we approached Canyon Junction trying to avoid the many snowmobiles that were following them. We finally returned to the lodge and sat down for an evening group dinner. Day 04 - We got up early for a sunrise shoot of Old Faithful erupting in the morning light. We were the only ones there, just the 8 of us and the driver, so space wasn’t an issue. It was the minus -24 degrees F before the sun came up that froze your fingers and breath that was the problem. Hand warmers helped and somehow, we got some great shots as the temperature differential doubles the plume volume to make some spectacular panoramic shots. We checked out, loaded our travel bags for transport back to the Mammoth Hot Springs Lodge and headed north searching for more wildlife and landscapes. We stopped at Black Sand Geyser, Biscuit Basin and Fountain Flat Drive for misty frost-covered tree shots and Gibbon Falls for the frozen ice formations. We stopped at the Norris Geyser Basin and Museum (closed for the winter) to shoot the steaming fumaroles, thermal mineral pools and spouting geysers located along the Porcelain Basin boardwalk loop. We arrived at the lodge, picked up our travel bags, checked into our hotel in Gardiner and had dinner at a local restaurant. Day 05 - From Gardiner, we picked up our box breakfast and headed east toward Cooke City stopping for views of Barronette Peak as the sun hit the top of the peak and headed into Lamar Valley for more wildlife and landscapes. We arrived at Cooke City and encountered a fox in the center of town, who posed for us as we headed out. We stopped along the way back at the Pebble Creek Campground, Specimen Ridge and ducked into the lower portion of Mammoth Hot Springs to shoot the cascading mineral formations. We returned to our hotel and met for a group dinner at our favorite local restaurant. Day 06 - It was another before sunrise departure, box breakfast and morning shoot of Barronette Peak as the sun hit the peak. We arrived in Cooke City and sat down for a group lunch at a local restaurant. The temperature was so low (-38 degrees F) that the animals took shelter, so we headed back early for an afternoon photo critique and briefing by Dr. James Halfpenny on the history of Yellowstone’s wildlife and forestry management efforts. It was one of the trips highlights and very informative. That evening, we met again for a group dinner in town. Day 07 - Recovery Day for me to catch up on downloading photos, sorting out the bad ones, and getting some rest from the early morning getups. Day 08 - It was check-out from hotel, pack bags, breakfast on your own and head back to Bozeman, Mt for flight departures from the Bozeman airport. On the way to Bozeman, we traveled along the Old Stagecoach Road again, stopping to shoot wildlife along the way. It was a spectacular winter wildlife adventure for everyone, and we have the photographs to prove it.

Event Summary - The gallery contains photographs taken each day of the event with a schedule, map of where we went showing field conditions encountered and participants doing their thing. The gallery provides a documentary of where we went, what we did and the photo opportunities each of us experienced. All of us want to thank Kathy and Suzanne for their guidance, technical expertise and suggestions that allowed us to properly capture the spectacular winter colors we experienced during the event . . . . GALLERY 49 - Alaska Wildlife Photography Tour - 24-31 March, 2024

Introduction - 7 people had signed up for the 2024 Alaska Wildlife Photography Tour held from the 24th - 31st March, 2024 conducted by professional photographer Jeff Wendorff sponsored by Muench Workshops. The workshop was scheduled to coincide with the peak of the herring spawning season in the bay areas located near Sitka, one of the largest spawning grounds located on the West Coast of North America. The large groups of herring attract feeding whales, seals, sealions and predator birds that feed on the massive schools migrating to the beaches to lay their eggs. Commercial Alaska fishermen also net the schools of herring for a very high demand Far East seafood market. The Alaska Fish & Wildlife Department monitors the herring migration and will clear a zone for commercial fishing after the herring have laid their eggs. Our goal was to follow the commercial boats who track the underwater schools maintaining our distance and shoot the wildlife that feed on the migrating schools. Day 01 - Our adventure began with arrival at the Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport and checking into the Aspen Suites Hotel in downtown Sitka. I finally met everyone at our group dinner held that evening at the local Bay View Pub, famous for its seafood chowder, a must with an Alaskan brewed dark porter draft beer served in a large mug. AAAhhh….!!! Jeff introduced me to everyone, and we all enjoyed the fresh Alaskan seafood dinner to begin our adventure. Day 02 - After breakfast and checking out of the hotel, we walked a short distance to the harbor and boarded the Alaskan Story, our home for the next 8 days. After lunch on board, we cruised out of the harbor into the bay area and among the many inlets and channels between the islands surrounding the Sitka Bay area. Days 03-07 - Each day began with an early morning breakfast followed by looking for sea life off the bow of the ship as we cruised along the shorelines among the many inland sea channels. We learned to watch for large groups of seagulls circling over a location as a clue that a certain herd of humpback whales that have learned to circle as a group a school of herring drawing them closer together, then one by one they burst thru the middle of the school surfacing with mouthfuls of herring. The circling seagulls watch for large bubbles coming from below indicating a humpy is making his run, and they catch the herring midair as they are tossed about from below or scoop them up as they hit the surface. It’s quite a spectacle to behold and burst mode with a fast shutter speed or movie mode are the only ways to capture the action. We ventured out to open waters one day but saw very little sea life. We ultimately followed the commercial fishing vessels who were tracking the herring runs inside the channel areas. We saw Humpback whales, Steller sea lions, bald eagles, sea otters and a rare Gray Whale not usually seen in this area. We had several photo review sessions and critiques while cruising from one location to another, and each evening we would anchor in a calm bay area to settle down. Day 08 - We finally headed back to Sitka, docked in the harbor, thanked our crew and chef for an outstanding adventure and checked back into the Aspen Suites Hotel. That evening we met for our farewell dinner again at the Bay View Pub. This was my second trip to Alaska and the most challenging photo experience that I can remember. I have older model cameras and lenses, and they have limited auto focus tracking capability on a subject 1,000’ ahead moving multidirectional the size of a pinhead. It takes internal AI built into the newer models with button lock-on tracking on a 600mm+ auto-stabilized lens. If I do another trip shooting small moving subjects at great distances, I will certainly rent newer photo equipment that can handle the job. Birders have learned what it takes and I was among a group that had the experience and the equipment to meet the distance demands. I did learn a lot, and we shared our best shots during the critiques, so it was certainly an educational experience in itself. I love the Alaska scencery as it is our last frontier and unspoiled wilderness and I certainly want to go back again and meet the challenges.

Event Summary - The gallery contains photographs taken each day of the event with a schedule, field conditions encountered, what we saw and the participants doing their thing. The gallery provides a documentary of what we did and the photo opportunities each of us experienced. All of us want to thank Jeff and the entire Alaskan Story crew for guiding and taking care of us on this voyage that allowed us to properly capture the spectacular sea life and feeding frenzies we experienced during our adventure . . . . GALLERY 48 - Fossil Rim Wildlife Center Safari, Glen Rose, TX - 2024 - 2001 - 4 Albums.

Introduction - The Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is a non-profit 501(c)3 entity, specializing in captive breeding programs for indigenous, exotic, endangered and threatened species. Their programs have expanded over the years to include : (1) the African Addax, (2) American Red Wolf, (3) Arabian Oryx, (4) Attwater’s Prairie Chicken, (5) Axis Deer, (6) Black-Footed Cat, (7) Cheetah, (8) Reticulated Giraffe, (9) Grevy’s Zebra, (10) is thru Mexican Grey Wolf, (11) both the Black and White Rhinos and (12) the Texas Horned Lizards. Guided Wildlife Tours are conducted daily with advanced reservations and overnight lodging on site is limited at the main lodge requiring booking in advance. Glen Rose, TX is the nearest community to the Wildlife Center for shopping, restaurants or overnight accommodations. Public access is thru the visitor’s entrance, while entrance to the main lodge is separate and gated. You have to obtain the gate combination by calling the lodge office in advance if you have a lodging reservation and are checking in. There is a gift shop with snacks and refreshments at the visitor’s center for daytime visitors. You can drive the loop road in your private vehicle and feed the animals roaming in the fields and pastures with grain pellets provided by the staff, but you cannot get out of your vehicle while on the self-driving tour for your own safety. The private tours include driving the loop road in a covered open van with a trained guide supplied with buckets of pellets to hand feet the giraffe and antelope that flock to your location for a handout. The private tour includes visiting the Attwater’s Prairie Chicken Research facility, White Rhino Barns and Children’s Animal Petting Center. Well worth the extra expense, which contributes to their ongoing research efforts.

Fossil Rim’s History - In the early 1970s, Fort Worth businessman Tom Mantzel had a penchant for making money in the oil industry and a passion for exotic animals. In 1973, he purchased an exotic game ranch called “Waterfall Ranch .“ He renamed the place the “Fossil Rim Wildlife Ranch,” and enthusiastically set about adding to its exotic hoofed herds. What began as a weekend retreat for Tom soon became a fulltime obsession. Under his management, Fossil Rim became the first ever ranch to participate in the Species Survival Plan (SSP) and he enrolled with the Amarican Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) to expand his research resources. His success with the Grevy’s Zebra breeding spurred further work with other endangered animals to include the African Addax. However, in 1984 when the near collapse of the petroleum industry was in full swing and the Texas economy was in a downturn, he decided to open the ranch to the public to continue financing and maintaining his species propagation programs. With his small staff, he built a nine-mile road thru the 1,400 acres of hills, pastures and forests to include power, water and sewage access. Fossil Rim eventually opened a snack bar and a souvenir shop. He was able to introduce three new species, the Grant’s Zebra, Ostrich and Reticulated Giraffe all based on his successful breeding programs and the increased financial income. To attract more involvement locally, Tom developed a volunteer program to help the many school groups, scouts, local organizations and individuals who wanted to participate in the ranch’s efforts to save endangered species. In 1985, the ranch expanded its endangered species program and obtained permission from the US government to allow the import of 6 cheetahs from South Africa. Since then, the cheetah program has grown into his most successful propagation effort with more than 200 cheetahs being born at Fossil Rim. By 1987, losses in the oil industry and the high maintenance costs of the ranch were financially unsustainable and he began a search for a partnership. Two individuals came forward and offered financial assistance, Jim Jackson and Krystyna Jurzykowski, who were very interested in the endangered species management programs fostered at the ranch and signed on as a partnership. However, it wasn’t long before foreclosure became imminent and the pair began negotiations to buy the ranch. The result of deliberations went from partnership to ownership, and the ranch became the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center on May 7, 1987. Since then, it has become a public owned shared entity relying on public/private donations and visitor fees/purchases to maintain facility operations.

Introduction - 8 people had signed up for the 2024 Alaska Wildlife Photography Tour held from the 16th thru the 28th of August, 2023 conducted by professional photographer Chris Bray and his assistant Nina. Chris is a well-known Australian photographer and this trip was recommended to me by one of my Australian friends, Kelvin Blake, that I had met on one of my previous photography tours to Borneo. He had already signed up for Chris’s tour and requested me to join him for the adventure to Alaska. How could I refuse such an opportunity and a chance to meet some more Aussies…!!! Day 01 - The workshop began the first day with my arrival at the Anchorage IAP and checking into the Historic Anchorage Hotel with an evening group orientation and introduction meeting hosted by Chris and Nina, followed by a group dinner at the 49th State Brewery, a local restaurant. The tour would include cruising around the local inland bays for sea life, and we would be spending 7 nites aboard one of the boats. We were told the highlight of the trip would be photographing Alaska brown bears up-close feeding on the salmon runs churning upstream. The evening dinner was a special treat as we were able to sample local seafood to include fresh salmon and crabmeat. Day 02 - Our journey began by checking out the Anchorage Hotel and traveling by van to Whittier Bay. We stopped along the way at a salmon spawning viewing area at Potter Marsh which is part of the Alaska Coastal Wildlife Refuge Areas and got a chance to check-out our photo equipment shooting the spawning salmon laying eggs. Upon arrival at Whittier Bay, we boarded a Lazy Otter charter skiff and cruised around the local bay area viewing the many glaciers that empty into the bay. As we cruised along the shoreline, we saw lots of seals and otters spread out on the rocks, seagulls and puffins along the cliffs and a small brown bear fishing for salmon where a stream enters the bay. Upon return to the dock, we stopped for a quick lunch at the Lazy Otter Coffee Shop before heading to our overnight condo unit and a special-order pizza & beer group dinner. It had been a long day…and that night a bear woke us up rattling the trash cans outside looking for left over scraps. It’s Alaska, what did we expect…!!! Day 03 - We started the day boarding the same skiff from the day before and cruised the Prince Willian Sound Bay area again. We were very lucky to view a spectacular glacier ice cave-in right in front of us with the bow wave rocking the boat. Chris had a photo equipped drone airborne at the time and got some spectacular video of the ice breaking away and crashing into the bay. What a great start….!!! Day 04 - Today was a travel day and after breakfast at the local Wild Catch Cafe, we headed to the Anchorage Airport for our flight to Kodiak Island. After landing, we grabbed our bags, loaded into a van and checked into the Kodiak Inn in downtown Kodiak. After a quick lunch, we walked to the harbor dock area and met our boat captain on the Island C for a wet weather gear fitting to include full body wet pants and wading boots. After the fitting, we gathered for a group dinner at the Kodiak Hana Restaurant best known for its sushi rolls. Day 05 - After breakfast and checking out of the hotel, we boarded the Island C for the next 7 days. After settling in and a quick lunch on board, we split into two skiffs and headed out traveling along the shorelines and inlets of the many islands within Kodiak Bay. We spotted a large group of sea otters, seabirds, salmon spawning, a deer and a fawn along the shoreline and a tree-top perched bald eagle scouting for a meal. The day ended with a fantastic on-board group dinner prepared by our own private chef. Days 06 - 07 - The next few days it was breakfast, load up into the skiffs and cruise within Kodiak Bay looking for wildlife among the rocks, cliffs and shoreline searching for puffins, sea otters, seals and sea lions. Days 08 - 11 - We left Kodiak Bay crossing thru the Shelikof Strait to Geographic Harbor located within the Katmai National Park for the most exciting part of the trip. Chris and Nina dropped us off onshore and we hiked a short distance to an island spit located between 2 large streams that empty into Geographic Harbor where Alaska Brown Bears gorge themselves this time of year with the salmon migration traveling upstream to spawn. We sat down on bucket seats provided by the crew packed in a tight group and set up our photo gear for breathtaking close-up encounters with bears and cubs feasting on salmon snatched from the water to gorge upon. We all held our breath once when a huge brown bear approached our group head on but turned aside at the last moment just 5 feet away and strolled right by us. Nobody moved. I commented he decided he couldn’t eat us all, so he just moved on…..not funny, JD !!! The best shots were bears charging head on splashing the water up trying to grab salmon just below them. Day 12 - This was our last day on board as we headed back to the docks at Kodiak and got a few wildlife shots along the way. We checked back into the Kodiak Inn and had our farewell dinner that evening. The next day we checked-out and headed to the Kodiak Airport for our return flights back home.

Event Summary - The gallery contains photographs taken each day of the event with a schedule, map of where we went, what we saw and participants doing their thing. The gallery provides a documentary of where we went, what we did and the photo opportunities each of us experienced. All of us want to thank Chris and Nina for their fortitude taking us to some of the most remote locations for the photo opportunities that allowed us to properly capture the spectacular scenery and up close and personal wildlife experiences during the event that we will never forget, and we definitely have the photographs to prove it. . . . Introduction - 13 people had signed up for the 2022 Upper Michigan Peninsula Photography Workshop held from 30th of September to 5th of October conducted by professional photographers Doug Johnson and Vince Gnoffo. The workshop was based out of the Northwoods Resort cabins located along the north shoreline of Lake Au Train near the town Munising, Michigan at the southern tip of Lake Superior. Day 01 - The workshop began with an evening group meeting at 7:00 pm at the lodge with introductions, schedule changes, safety considerations, equipment, clothing, carpooling, etc. Day 02 - We all carpooled to our first shoot location located at Otter Lake for a sunrise shoot followed by lectures and a critique in the afternoon and an evening sunset shoot along Sand Point Beach. Day 03 - We departed before sunrise for an early morning shoot at Laughing Whitefish Falls; again, with afternoon lectures and another critique. The evening and sunset shoot was at the historic Au Sable Light Station located on a cliff overlooking the lake followed by an optional celestial star shoot at Sand Point Beach. Day 04 - Because of the late-night shoot, the morning was free, with lectures and a critique in the afternoon. The highlight of the workshop was the evening cruise viewing the Pictured Rocks National Shoreline along the east coastline of Lake Superior with its caverns and multi-colored limestone formations with a gorgeous sunset. Day 05 - The last day of shooting included optional locations and I chose two local waterfalls Munising and Chapel Falls. The fall colors were quite spectacular with bright red and orange maples, beech, white birch, conifers and aspens. Day 06 - Final day of the workshop started with a critique (3 images) and a final slideshow (15 images) of our best shots. I was most impressed with the quality and assortment of images and glad I attended the workshop with such a proficient group of photographers.

GALLERY 42 - Canadian Rockies Photography Workshop - 27 May - 3 June, 2022

Day 01 - Arrival Lake Louise, Group Meeting - 32 photos

Introduction - 8 people had signed up for the 2022 Canadian Rockies Photography Workshop held from 2nd of May thru the 3rd of June conducted by professional photographers Doug Johnson and Jen Mefford, based out of the Lake Louise Inn, Lake Louise, Alberta Province. The workshop had already been postponed twice because the Canadian border had been closed for the last 2 years to non-essential travelers due to COVID precautions. Day 01 - Well, the workshop finally began with an evening group meeting at the lodge with introductions, schedule changes, safety considerations, equipment, clothing, carpooling, etc. starting a 7:00 pm. Day 02 - We all carpooled to our first shoot location located at Johnston Canyon located along HW 1A and hiked the elevated trail along the cliffs to the lower falls. Great shots. It was back to the lodge for an afternoon lecture and free time in the evening. Day 03 - We departed before sunrise for an early morning shoot along the still ice-covered shoreline of Lake Louise with views of the glacier fields on the opposite shoreline. After a group breakfast, it was back to the lodge for an afternoon critique (5 images) and lectures. We left early in the evening for a group dinner along the way to Emerald Lake for a late evening shoot. Day 04 - It was an early morning departure again for an all-day shoot beginning at Herbert Lake with the rising sun reflecting snow-capped peaks in the background. Our second location was to Mistaya Falls with its deeply carved limestone canyons, followed by a group breakfast along our way to the Columbia Icefields and views of the receding Athabasca Glacier. Our last stop for the morning included Beauty Creek and a short climb to Stanley Falls. After that it was back to the lodge for a free afternoon. Day 05 - Another early morning departure heading east this time to Two-Jacks Lake for an early sunrise shoot. A flock of feeding Canadian geese provided some amusing entertainment. The afternoon included a critique (5 images) and lectures followed by free time in the evening. Day 06 - The day began early with a sunrise shoot at Vermillion Lakes located just a mile west of the town of Banff followed by a group breakfast there in town at a local restaurant. The afternoon included a critique (3 images), lectures and submittal of your images (up to 15) for the last day’s slideshow. Day 07 - Final day of the workshop starting with a critique (3 images) and a final slideshow of our selected images. I was most impressed with the quality and assortment of images shown during the critiques and in the final slideshow presentation and really glad I attended the workshop with such a proficient group of photographers.

Comment - Since I had done the reconnaissance trip last year on my own when last year’s trip had been canceled, I knew the best spots at most of the locations to head to first, so the expression ensued - “follow JD, he just knows where to go.” I felt pretty good about that, and several people took advantage of that.

GALLERY 41 - Oregon Coast Photography Workshop - 23-25May, 2022

Introduction - Only 2 people had signed up for the 2022 Oregon Coast Photography Workshop held from May 22-25, 2022. The event was staged out of Manzanita, Oregon located along the rugged NW Oregon coastline just south of Astoria, Oregon. It is a popular surfing area and the beaches are open to the public according to Oregon law, which allows easy access from the coastal roads. The event was led by professional photographers Sarah Ehlen and David Marx of Glacier Photo Guides based out of Columbia Falls, MT. Activities included sunrise and evening shoots along the cliff-lined coastal beaches and a few forest trails with waterfalls. Since there were only 2 of us, we loaded up each morning in their van and headed out to each location not worried about parking or losing vehicles in trail. Also, it was easier for seating at the local diners for meals. After each morning shoot, we would head back to our lodging at the Inn at Manzanita for afternoon lectures and photo critiques each day held at the furnished condo the instructors had rented just for the workshop. After the critique, it was hands-on instruction of photo processing techniques, which was greatly appreciated. It was really one-on-one instruction, particularly in the field, and it couldn’t get any better than that. Our field shoots included: Day 01 - Group introduction in the morning going over schedule, safety issues, equipment, etc. followed by an afternoon and evening field shoot. Our first location was Oswald West Beach and then Ecola Point Indian Beach for the evening shoot. We did stop for a group dinner before heading to the second beach location. We saw surfers at both locations doing their thing. Day 02 - We started before sunrise and headed to Nehalem Beach State Park to catch our first sunrise. The tide was out allowing us to get some great beach shots with huge piles of driftwood in the foreground. After breakfast at Wanda’s, it was off to Arcadia and the Chapman Beaches for rock cliffs, tide pools with sea anomie, barnacles and starfish abound. The sand dunes at Chapman Beach were a highlight that included a young deer wandering among the seagrass above the beach. After dinner, we headed out to Haystack Rock for an evening shoot. We were treated to an evening campfire complete with beach chairs provided by David and Sarah as beach fires are permitted along the Oregon coastline if properly extinguished. Day 03 - Morning fog cancelled the sunrise shoot, so after breakfast, it was off to a historic 1936 US Coast Guard Boat House and pier used by the locals for crab fishing, then to the Munson Creek Falls nature trail and views of the cascading falls, followed by a visit to the Tillamook Naval Air Station Museum and aircraft displays within the former WWII dirigible hanger; and, finally a visit to the historic Cape Meares Lighthouse (a total of 9 were built along the Oregon coastline in the late 1800’s) with its 1-ton crystal lens overlooking the Pacific coastline. After dinner, we headed to the cliffs overlooking Oceanside Beach for some great evening shots. Day 04 - The final day of the workshop included a foggy morning shoot at Arch Cape and Oswald West Beach followed by a nature hike along the Necarney Creek Trail with moss covered old growth cedars. We spotted a large herd of elk feeding along a stream and got lots of close-ups, but not too close. The day ended at the Rockway Beach Overlook with some great sunset shots.

GALLERY 40 - Canadian Rockies Reconnaissance Trip - 22-25 August, 2021

Introduction - I had previously signed up for another of Doug Johnson’s photography workshops this year to the Canadian Rockies based out of Lake Louise, Alberta Province that had been scheduled from the 22nd to the 26th of August this year. Unfortunately, Doug had to postpone the workshop until next year because the Canadian Border was still closed to non-essential travelers because of COVID-19 restrictions, even though the US border was open unrestricted. I had already booked accommodations at Deer Lodge, Lake Louise for the event, but called and told them to hold the reservation to see if the border would open. Well, Canada did open their border on the 9th of August, and I decided to go anyway and do a reconnaissance mission for the locations Doug had intended to visit. Well, it wasn’t easy to get there...as Canada customs required submitting on-line before your entry a 2-page form specifying your planned entry/exit dates, lodging accommodations with a quarantine plan, proof of initial vaccinations, a negative COVID-19 test 72 hours prior to your entry and a current passport. Well, I got thru all of that although several cars in front of me had to turn around as they didn’t have all the required documents. I was able to get to 7 of the 9 places that Doug had identified for the workshop and got to several of the locations facing east before sunrise to get the sun cresting over the mountain tops. I planned for afternoon shots at the water falls as the light lowered into the valleys reducing the shadows. There were hardly any people at the locations I visited apparently because of the travel restrictions locally, so it was no problem getting to the best location for each landscape shot. I sent some of the photos to Doug, especially the ones at Peyto Lake Overlook as a new expanded wooden platform had been constructed over the summer at the overlook, which opened up the views, and it now overhangs the cliffside for much wider views for panoramic shots.

Comment - Overall, I’m glad I went on the reconnaissance trip even though it was a pain in the ass to get into Canada, but the weather and views were spectacular. There was no smoke from forest fires, and the cloud cover was just right. I was able to judge how far each trek into the best viewpoints was as my knees give out after 4 miles even though I wear knee braces. It was a good adventure, and I got some great shots to show for it……JDT

GALLERY 39 - Colorado Mountains & Wildflowers Workshop 11-17 July, 2021

Day 01 - Arrival Ouray, Check-In Loding, Group Meeting, Introductions, Schedule - 12 photos

Introduction - 14 people had signed up for the 2021 Colorado Mountains & Wildflowers Photography Workshop held from the 11th thru the 17th of July, 2021. The event was staged out of the Ouray Inn located in Ouray, Colorado, a former mining town located in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. The event was led by professional photographer Doug Johnson and assisted by Betsy Banks of Doug Johnson Photography (DJP), who are based out of Missoula, MT. Activities included sunrise and early evening shoots at various locations in rugged mining country along steep winding mountain roads formerly hued out of solid rock by mining companies in earlier times. We would load up in two specially equipped jeeps driven by professional drivers to venture into the high country, often higher than 10,000 ft above sea level. The wildflowers were in full bloom, so there was plenty of opportunity for macro photography as well as grand landscape shots of the surrounding San Juans. Between location shoots, we had afternoon lectures and photography critiques of your photos submitted for evaluation. The high mountain gravel roads were in good shape, but you had to be careful and not look down at the terrain below you for fear of being sucked out of the jeep. It was scary stuff…especially when the jeeps had to back up just to complete the turns around some of the sharp corners. For our local shoots, car-pooling was recommended as parking was limited at most of the locations. Highlights of the workshop included: Day 01 - Initial meeting in the evening at the San Juan Room located upstairs in the Ouray Conference and Community Center building at 7:00 pm for group introductions, schedule changes and an overview of planned workshop activities, safety issues and anticipated weather/temperature conditions. Day 02 - It was an early morning carpool departure heading north thru the town of Ridgway to the Last Dollar Road, stopping first at the Dallas Divide pullout for a sunrise shoot. However, residual smoke from the recent forest fires blocked out the sun, so we moved on to a further stopping point along the Last Dollar Road. As the sun got higher, the highlighted mountain tops in the background with widespread fall-colored aspen groves in the foreground made for great landscape shots. It was back to Ouray Inn for an afternoon lecture and critique (3 images), then off by jeep this time south to Black Bear Pass for fields of sunlit wildflowers and a mountain sunset. Day 03 - It was another early morning jeep departure for a sunrise shoot at the spectacular Yankee Boy Basin. This is my favorite shooting location offering large fields of wildflowers and spectacular mountain views. I could have spent all day there, but we had to get back for the afternoon lecture and photo critique (5 images). Since rainstorms were being forecast, the evening shoot was cancelled, and we got an evening off to catch up on downloading and backing-up our photos. Day 04 - The morning shoot was cancelled as the rains continued thru the morning. That was a good thing as it cleared out the smoke and brought the puffy white clouds back. Also, we finally got to have breakfast offered by the Inn every morning, which we would miss with our early departures before the sun came up. We gathered together at noon for another lecture and submitted 3 images for the critique. After the critique, we headed by carpool south to the town of Silverton known most for its steam engine depot that serves as the terminal for the Durango to Silverton run. Because of COVID-19 issues, the rail was not operating, but I went to the terminal anyway as there are lots of historical railroad displays still in the rail yard. After a short time in Silverton, we carpooled south climbing to the top of Molas Pass for panoramic shots of the surrounding mountains and mountain top reflections in Little Molas Lake. Day 05 - We got back to our normal schedule with an early morning jeep departure to Silver Basin carved out by glaciers long ago leaving a shallow lake surrounded by huge fields of wildflowers. We spent all morning there and got some great shots as the skies were now clear. It was back to the Inn for more lectures in the afternoon followed by a late afternoon carpool departure. We first drove south to the Red Mountain Restoration Area to photograph the remaining mining structures, which were basically closed to foot traffic because of COVID issues. So after a brief stop, we headed down the mountain to Crystal Lake for the evening shoot. Day 06 - This was the last day of the workshop and our best as it was an all-day event. We started by jeep before the sun came up driving thru Corkscrew Pass along the Alpine Loop Road climbing thru California Gulch to, it seemed, the top of the world arriving at California Pass (elev. 12,960 ft) for some spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. When the light became harsh as the sun rose above the mountain tops, we continued further along the road arriving at the ghost town of Animas Forks. The site has been fully restored and designated a BLM National Historical Site. You can walk among the restored buildings offering great photographic opportunities. The day and workshop concluded with a group dinner at a local restaurant. It was a great workshop, and I must say that this was the best group of photographers I’ve been with at any of the other workshops I’ve attended. I hope to meet you all again at another event….JDT

Event Summary - The gallery contains photographs taken each day of the event beginning with a schedule of that day’s activities, a map of where we went and photos of participants showing field conditions encountered, photographic equipment used and the instructors interfacing with the participants. The gallery provides a documentary of where we went, what we did and the photo opportunities each of us experienced during the event. All of us want to thank Doug and Betsy for their guidance, technical expertise and suggestions that allowed us to properly capture the magical moments we experienced during the workshop.

GALLERY 38 - 2019 Orbridge Canadian Rockies Tour - 9-15 August, 2019

Introduction - The 2019 Orbridge Canadian Rockies Tour included 32 members of the Texas A&M University Traveling Aggies accompanied by Gary Blair and Kyla Gar, our host and hostess representing the Association of Former Students, and Joan Pitman and Bruce and Sara Schundler as our Orbridge Tour Leaders. It was a fantastic tour with breathtaking views of the Canadian Rockies hampered by morning fog initially, but offering unique views of clouded snow-covered mountain tops, massive glaciers and yes, abundant wildlife. Highlights during the tour included a historical tour of Banff and the surrounding area, views of Lake Moraine in the Valley of Ten Peaks, a ski lift ride and nature walk at the Lake Louise Ski Basin with a mother grizzly bear sighting with 2 cubs, a Lake Maligne boat tour to Spirit Island surrounded by majestic mountain peaks and a Maligne River Canyon walk with the river going underground below you, river rafting on the Athabasca River, views of Athabasca Falls, a picnic lunch at Herbert Lake, views of turquoise Emerald Lake, lunch and tour at the historic Kootenay Park Lodge and a Paint Pots trail walk.

Trip Summary - Day 01 - The tour began at the Lake Louise Chateau nestled at the base of Lake Louise with an evening group reception, staff introductions and overview of the schedule, followed by a sit-down group dinner. Day 02 - The adventures began after breakfast with an early morning optional nature walk along the shoreline of Lake Louise. Following the walk, it was a drive to the town of Banff, arriving at the Whyte Museum for a guided historic tour along the Bow River Trail visiting the historic St. George Anglican Church, Luxton Residence Museum and then back to the Whyte Museum and viewing the displays of pioneers who originally settled the area. Lunch was on your own in Banff followed by the bus ride back to Lake Louise. The afternoon included a historical tour of the Lake Louise Chateau where Swiss guides would lead glacial climbs to the surrounding peaks followed by a walking tour along the lake shoreline with views of canoers enjoying a lake outing. After the tour, it was free time with dinner on your own. Day 03 - It was onward by bus to the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. We made a stop at Moraine Lake before the usual crowds showed up and hiked the short steep trail to the top of the moraine rock pile, which was the terminal remnants of a huge glacier that carved the valley. From the top we got spectacular views of the glacial-fed Moraine Lake surrounded by ten mountain peaks off in the distance. Of course, the first of many group pictures was taken overlooking the lake. From there, it was a short bus ride to the Lake Louise Ski Resort for a gondola ride to the top. Along the way just below us was a mother grizzly bear with two cubs feeding on berries….what a treat. At the top we were split into two groups for a guided nature walk entering the forested terrain thru an electric fence barrier intended to keep bears and other predators on their side of the fence. After the hike and buffet lunch at the lodge, it was back on the bus for the scenic drive to Jasper National Park, arriving at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge located just outside the town of Jasper. It was check-in and an included sit-down evening dinner. Day 04 - After the self-serve breakfast buffet, it was load up the bus for the short drive to the Maligne Lake Lodge boat dock. We were the 1st boat out on the lake for our 1-hour cruise to the famous Spirit Island, which is really a small peninsula jutting from the shoreline with a spectacular view of the surrounding snow-capped peaks in the distance. A famous photographer in earlier times captured the majestic view and it became a popular marketing image for Canadian Rockies tourism. Of course, we got our soon-to-be famous group picture there too. One theory behind how it got its name is that a pioneer minister buried his son on the island, hence Spirit Island. After the boat ride, it was lunch on your own at the lake resort followed by a short out-and-back walk to Bridge #3 on the Maligne River Canyon Trail. The river flows below you thru a deep canyon with several water falls roaring below you….quite spectacular. After the walk, it was back on the bus and those who had signed up for the optional Athabasca River Rafting headed out to the put-in-point upriver and the rest of the group spent the afternoon in the town of Jasper on their own. Day 05 - It was the bag drag, breakfast buffet and load up the bus drill for our final destination, the town of Banff and the historic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Along the way. our first stop included Athabasca Falls, which was spectacular because the river was really high from recent rains. Of course, we had to get another group picture. We next stopped at the historic Nun-Ti-Jah Lodge located at the foot of Bow Lake and had a picnic lunch at the beautiful Herbert Lake. We arrived at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel for check-in, room assignments and an evening on your own. Day 06 - Our last day began with an early morning breakfast buffet and load up the bus for Emerald Lake, a gemstone hidden in the Canadian Rockies followed by lunch and a guided tour at the historic Kootenay Park Lodge. Our last stop was a short hike on the Paint Pots Trail before heading back to the Lodge. The evening ended with our farewell dinner.

Event Summary - Overall, the tour was most excellent, and many new friendships were fostered as we all trapesed amongst the spectacular scenery of the Canadian Rockies. I would like to personally thank the Orbridge guides who made the trip most enjoyable and our bus driver, who kept our coach spic and span the whole time. Hopefully, these pictures will bring back fond memories of the enjoyable moments we spent and shared together …..JDT

GALLERY 37 - 2018 Baby Wildlife Triple D Photo Workshop, Kalispell, MT - 8-12 June, 2018.

Introduction - 10 people had signed up for the 2018 Triple D Baby Wildlife Photography Workshop held from 8th-12th of June, 2018 located just on the outskirts of Kalispell, Montana. The event was led by professional photographer Jeff Wendorff, who has led countless photo workshops at the Triple D Game Farm for many years. Workshop activities included morning and afternoon wildlife shoots from selected locations at the Triple D Game Farm to include: Day 01 - Began with a 6:00 pm initial evening orientation meeting at the business center, Springhill Suites in Kalispell for group introductions, review of the proposed schedule, briefing on wildlife safety and an overview of planned workshop activities. Day 02 - Started with a 6:00 am early morning safety briefing at the Triple D Game Farm reception area and departure for a morning shoot of a pair of Red & Silver Fox pups, a mother wolf with two Wolf Pups, and a very young Siberian Lynx kitten all at a selected location. We returned back to the ranch for a more shoots of four of the cutest Canadian Lynx kittens and a nearly full-grown Grizzly Bear very comfortable splashing about in a pond showing off to the crowd. In the afternoon after lunch, we went back out to the field to another location to shoot a precious pair of baby Pine Martins, a shy baby Porcupine and a cute baby Badger.  Day 03 - It was a 10:00 am wx delayed departure for a field shoot of a majestic Siberian Tiger and Wolf Reflections at a location with a large pond used for foreground reflections. That afternoon, we attended a group critique session of 12 submitted photos from the previous day by the instructor back at the hotel conference room. Day 04 - Started with a 5:45 am early morning departure for a shoot at a remote location of a juvenile Mountain Lion for action shots jumping between huge rocks followed by a second repeat session with the Siberian Lynx kitten. That afternoon, we shot the second half of the baby Porcupine and the Canadian Lynx kitten sessions in a different setting. Again, after the shoot, it was lunch on your own followed by an afternoon critique session submitting 12 more photos for critique by the instructor. Day 05 - The day started at 6:45 am with an early morning shoot at a remote location with a group of Coyote Pups, baby Otter and a special treat afforded with the now juvenile Snow Leopard. Again, after returning back to the ranch and lunch, we got together for the final critique of 12 more images. It was a busy 4 days of shooting, and I was most pleased with the new Nikon D810 camera body I had recently purchased with its higher 36 mp full-frame sensor and improved multi-point focus tracking system than the older D700 I had used before. I shot over 3,100 photos during the 4-day session mostly in short burst modes, so picking 12 photos for each critique was an effort in itself, but you don’t miss much during an action shot sequence with the high-shutter speed burst mode, which is the objective. Eye contact is the key feature I look for now as well as focus. I still need more practice tracking and leading moving subjects while still keeping then in the frame….. I know, practice, practice, practice.

Event Summary - The gallery contains photographs taken each day of the 4-day workshop of the baby wildlife sorted and combined by individual animals that I photographed. All of us that participated in the event want to especially thank Jeff Wendorff for his expert guidance, patience and technical suggestions that allowed us to properly capture the photographic moments we experienced during this baby wildlife workshop. In addition, we want to especially thank the wonderful staff of the Triple D Game Farm, who provided us the magical moments with the wildlife in complete safety at all times. We all hope to return again in the near future to expand our portfolios of wonderful wildlife photos. Please enjoy the photos I took during the event displayed below…..JDT

GALLERY 35 - 2017 Chaco Canyon National Historical Park - 9 October, 2017.

Introduction - After the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, I stayed another 2 days to take photos of some of the cultural sites located nearby that I had not visited before. I drove the 70 miles up to the Chaco Culture National Historic Park starting early the next morning so that I could get some sunrise shots amongst the adobe structures. I began at 4:30 am heading west along I-40 planning to enter thru the south entrance before sunrise. However, after leaving I-40, the roads became rough dirt country roads with poorly marked signs (easy to miss in the dark) pointing the way to the National Park. Max safe speed was 25 mph over the ruts and washboard without severe bouncing. I thought for sure I was lost, but GPS pointed onward. Well, sunrise came and went and I finally got to the Park Entrance around 8:00 am and there, the roads suddenly turned to asphalt. It was all Indian Reservation after leaving the Interstate and the roads were obviously not maintained. The Visitors Center was open, so I spent some time there as I knew very little about the site. The site is quite impressive and well restored and worth the visit. After the rough trip entering from the south, I decided to exit north this time thinking it has to be the main entrance. Guess what…just as rough after leaving the asphalt roads within the Park, but much shorter. If you ever decide to visit this site, if it rains or the roads are wet, stay home. If you have low clearance, get another vehicle and absolutely, don’t follow another vehicle unless you want to eat dust the whole way. But, once you get there, it is a fantastic place to visit.

Background: Chaco Canyon National Monument was established in 1907 and the site became Chaco Culture National Historic Park in 1980 and a World Heritage Site in 1987. Chaco inhabitants began construction in the mid 800’s using local sandstone quarried from the nearby cliffs to build massive multi-story buildings up until the mid 1100’s. Chaco Canyon became the center of a far-reaching trade network to include seashells, macaws, copper, cacao beans (chocolate) from as far as central Mexico. They imported turquoise from distant mines crafting exquisite beads, necklaces and pendants. The distinctive black-on-white Cibola pottery may have originated from trading with other sites located nearby. Stone construction evolved from one-stone thick layers packed with mud mortar as found in the oldest Pueblo Bonito site to wider double-width rubble core-filled walls with stone veneer and internal wooden beam supports required for the multi-storied dwellings. Other masonry techniques included tabular sandstone blocks chinked with smaller stones set in mortar. Many of the interior walls were covered with plaster that were engraved or painted with decorations. By the early 1100’s, the later-named McElmo style as evident in the later Kin Kletso site which had narrower rubble cores with thicker shaped layered veneer sandstone. By the late 1100’s, reorganization of the Chacoan world led to abandonment of the site to other regional centers located at Mesa Verde, Aztec or to the Chuska Mountains. Today, many of the southwest native tribes can trace their descendants to the Chaco Nation and their heritage is still seen as an important spiritual aspect to be honored and respected. (Ref: Chaco Culture Pamphlet, UPS, US Dept of the Interior, GPO 2017-398-407/30858, updated 2016).

Site Summary - There are numerous dwellings, trails and petroglyphs located within Chaco Canyon, so in the limited time I was there, I visited only 4 of the larger sites that were easily accessible from the centrally located main parking lot. I have indicated on a map in each of the sites I visited, its location and included informative description as outlined in the trail handbooks that are available at the Visitors Center. There are ranger-guided tours that you can sign up for at the service desk, so check on departure times and availability before you head out on your own.

(1) Visitors Center - The Visitors Center is open all year from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm 7 days a week. The Center was recently renovated, and numerous displays and information boards were added for additional information. A video is shown in the auditorium highlighting important features of the park and its history. There are trail guides available to purchase providing feature details at each of the numbered stops along the trails at each site. Be sure to ask at the information desk if there are any openings in the ranger-guided tours, which are most informative. The displays at the Visitors Center provide valuable information about the history of the sites and the cultural significance of the area.

(2) Chetro Ketl Site - Located just northeast of the main parking area, Chetro Ketl is the second largest site covering more than 3 acres. The site contains a great kiva and several smaller elevated kivas. An elevated plaza was constructed that stands 12 feet above the valley floor. Chetro Ketl was constructed around AD 1030 using the core and veneer technique with flat-facing stones cemented with mud mortar. You can view one of the excavated rooms containing the original plaster walls decorated with a blue and green painted mural.

(3) Petroglyph Trail - The Petroglyph Trail begins just a few yards northwest of the Chetro Ketl site extending 0.25 miles west along the cliff wall leading to the Pueble Bonito site. Chaco Canyon petroglyphs are unique as several techniques were combined found at no other cultural location. In addition to sharp-edged stones used for chipping and gouging, smooth-faced stones were scraped sideways to prep the rock surface before engraving. Sticks were used as drills and as chisels for precise detail work. Chaco Canyon is the only ancient site where pecking, incising, abrading and drilling were all combined into a single image. A relief technique was also used where the background is chipped away to elevate the carving, only similarly found on Easter Island. Paints were formulated by grinding minerals like calcium carbonate (white), hematite and ochre (red), and charcoal (black), and mixed with plant or animal oils, egg, blood or urine to adhere to the rock surface. The most common carving includes spirals and open-legged stick figures. Most images represent ceremonial, astronomy, hunting or route migration symbiology.

(4) Pueblo Bonito Site - Centrally located within the Chaco Canyon wash, the Pueblo Bonito site was built in several stages between the mid-800’s to the early 1100’s. Dwelling there reached five stories high totaling over 600 rooms and 40 kivas. The marked round-trip 0.7-mile trail begins first circulating the outer perimeter and ends winding thru the site. Upon entry, you descend into the complex entering thru numerous doorways and climbing amongst the multitude of rooms built in various stages. The site is distinctly D-shaped facing to the south with high curved outer walls defining 2 major plazas with a central wall dividing the arenas into a west and east main plaza. The great Kiva is a large subterranean structure likely used for religious worship, prayer vigils, ceremonial dancing and other main public gatherings. There are numerous smaller kivas located throughout the site used for lesser ceremonial purposes.

(5) Pueblo del Arroyo Site - Built within two short periods between AD 1065 to 1150, the Pueblo del Arroyo site is atypical to the other sites as there is no great kiva, no elevated earthen mounds or a south facing plaza. The site faces ESE with an unobstructed view thru the south gap towards Hosta Butte and the rising sun. The large round tri-wall structures are rare to the Chaco region and may have had some significance. As you view the structures, you will be amazed how well they were constructed using primitive tools, mud as cement and placing stones, timbers, branches and twigs to form layers and layers of living quarters.

(6) Casa Rinconada Site - Build on the south side of the Chaco Canyon, it contains the largest great kiva in the park with an orientation true North-South. The marked 0.5-mi roundtrip trail leads you thru multiple village settings that were recently excavated, documented and then back-filled for preservation.

GALLERY 34 - 2017 RMSP Wildlife Photo Workshop Triple D Game Farm - 29-31 July, 2017

Introduction - 12 people had signed up for the Missoula, MT based Rocky Mountain School of Photography (RMSP) 2017 Triple D Baby Wildlife Photography Workshop held from the 29th-31st of June, 2017, located just on the outskirts of Kalispell, Montana. The event was led by professional photographers Neil and Forest Chaput de Saintonge, who returned back to the Triple D Game Farm after a long absence to again conduct wildlife photography workshops at this location. Workshop activities included morning and afternoon wildlife shoots from selected locations at the Triple D Game Farm with critiques and classroom lectures conducted by the instructors between shoots.  The workshop activities included: Day 01 - Began with a 6:00 pm initial evening orientation meeting at the newly refurbished lecture room located at the Triple D ranch for group introductions, proposed schedule, wildlife safety briefing and an overview of planned workshop activities. Day 02 - Started with a 6:00 am departure for a morning shoot of a young Mountain Lion Cub, a fully-grown Siberian Tiger and Wolf Reflections at a remote pond location near the Game Farm. In the afternoon after lunch, we met back at the ranch for the first critique of 6 selected photos taken that morning session followed by classroom lectures on lighting, composition and post processing workflow.  Day 03 - It was again a 6:00 am departure for an early morning shoot at remote locations of a juvenile Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard Cub, Canadian Lynx Cub and 2 young Coyote Cubs. That afternoon, we attended a group editing session led by the instructors (bring your own lunch) followed by a critique of 8 submitted photos from that morning shoot. A wrap-up followed the critique and the workshop ended at noon. The most informative lecture for me was the presentation by Neil on the latest developments of mirrorless Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras comparing the features of 3 of the top models and their limitations. Hopefully, the RMSP continues these workshops in the future at the Triple D, and I would recommend they add another day to the event as there are so many more animals to challenge even the most experienced photographer.

Event Summary - The gallery contains photographs taken each day of the 3-day workshop of the wildlife in staged field conditions that have been sorted and combined by individual animals that I photographed. All of us that participated in the event want to especially thank Neil and Forest for their expert guidance, patience and professional guidelines that allowed us to properly capture the photographic moments we experienced during the wildlife workshop. In addition, we want to especially thank the wonderful staff of the Triple D Game Farm, who provided us the magical moments with the wildlife in complete safety at all times. We all hope to return again in the near future to expand our portfolios of wonderful wildlife photos.…..JDT

GALLERY 33 - 2017 Arches and Canyonlands NP Photography Workshop - 17-22 April, 2017.

Introduction - 10 people signed up for the 2017 Arches & Canyonlands NP Photography Workshop held from the 17th thru the 22nd of April, 2017, based out of the Holiday Inn Express, Moab, UT, which is centrally located in the heart of “Red Rock Country” in the desert portion of south-central Utah. The event was led by professional photographer Doug Johnson and assisted by Jen Mefford of Doug Johnson Photography, who are based out of Missoula, MT. Activities included sunrise and early evening shoots at Arches National Park and at the central portion of Canyonlands National Park with afternoon lectures and photography critiques interspersed between shooting sessions. The park entrance roads at Arches NP were under construction and renovation at night, so the schedule had to be modified as the park was closed to traffic after 7:00 pm except for weekends. The schedule was modified to include the park shoots over the weekend. Highlights of the workshop included: Day 01 - Met at the conference room at the Holiday Inn Express at 7:00 pm for group introductions, revised schedule and went over planned workshop activities. Lecture topics included health and safety issues, proper equipment, weather considerations and car pooling. Day 02 - It was an early morning departure for a sunrise shoot from the Green River Overlook located in the central portion of Canyonlands National Park as the rising sun highlighted the deep winding plateau tops that had been carved out by the Green River. After lunch, there was a photo critique back at the hotel and another lecture. That afternoon, we headed out early to Arches NP to Park Avenue and hiked the trail into the valley shooting the overhead red rock formations towering above you. We had to exit the park by 7:00 pm due to the road construction and dinner that night was on your own. Day 03 - It was another early morning departure for a sunrise shoot at the Dead Horse Point State Park overlooking the intersection of the Colorado and Green Rivers with the morning sun highlighting the deep canyon walls. After the shoot, we returned to Moab for lunch and a second photo critique followed by lectures. We departed in the early afternoon driving along the Potash Plant Road to the trailhead for Corona Arch, first stopping at the ancient Indian Petroglyphs displays along the roadside. The climb up to the arch was challenging with steep narrow edges hanging on to a steel cable as you crept along the edge and even scaling up a ladder to finally reach the arch. It was a pack-in dinner late in the evening under the arch. Day 04 - Because of the late evening, it was late morning lectures followed by lunch and a third photo critique. The weather started to move in late in the afternoon. so dark clouds and distant rainfall showers with sunlight breaking through the clouds made the second photo shoot at the Green River Overlook rather dramatic. The planned night star shoot at Mesa Arch had to be cancelled because of the overcast skies.  Day 05 - Again, because of the late-nite shoot, it was late morning lectures, lunch and a fourth critique. We departed early in the afternoon for the 1.5-mile hike up to Delicate Arch starting from the Wolfe Creek Ranch located within Arches National Park. The crowds were huge at the Arch, but everyone seemed to find a spot to exclude most of the people. Again, it was a pack-in dinner and a make-up flashlight painting and star-light shoot at the trail exit point at the Wolfe Creek Ranch. Day 06 - The last day of the photo workshop included a sunrise shoot at the Window Section at Arches NP with the classic shot behind the North Window with Turret Arch in the background. Others chose to hike beneath the Double Arch and photograph views from beneath the two arches. On the return, some photographed the towering Balance Rock. The workshop ended with a fifth photo critique, followed by a final slideshow presentation of 15 of each participants favorite shots and a group dinner at Eddie McStiff’s Steakhouse located in downtown Moab. Day 07 - I stayed over a day after the workshop and Mark and Austin Mosley and I drove the Shafer and Gemini Bridges Jeep Trails starting after our breakfast as they had rented a jeep for the workshop just to do jeep trails afterwards. I had lived in Moab for a short time and recommended these two trails as they do a clockwise loop thru the Canyonlands NP and are two of the better trails for first time off-road drivers and the views are breathtaking. It was well worth the trip with spectacular overhead views of the deep canyons along the Colorado River at the Gooseneck Overlook. We had a pack-in lunch and drinks while stopping at the Muscleman Arch located along the White Rim Trail, and the views climbing out of the canyon along the west portion of Shafer Trail were really great. Once on top of the plateau, we veered onto the Gemini Bridges Trail from the Dead Horse Point State Park road and worked our way back to Moab thru the steep winding cliff-hanging road back to civilization. We celebrated our perilous ride with dinner and fresh brews from the Moab Brewery….great stuff.

Event Summary - The gallery contains photographs taken each day of the event beginning with a schedule of that day’s activities, a map of where we went and photos of the participants showing field conditions encountered, photographic equipment used and the instructors interfacing with the participants. The gallery provides a documentary of where we went, what we did and the photo opportunities each of us experienced during the event. All of us want to thank Doug and Jen for their guidance, technical expertise and suggestions that allowed us to properly capture the magical moments we experienced during the workshop….JDT

GALLERY 31 - 2017 to 2006 - Colorado Ski Trips - 10 Albums.

Introduction - Well, it was back to Telluride after a year’s layoff for the 7 of us Texas skiers that signed up for the annual 2017 Colorado Ski Trip held from the 12th thru the 18th of February, 2017 at Telluride Ski Basin based out of Mountain Lodge Telluride located on the ski slopes above the town of Telluride. This was the 11th annual ski event the group had organized and the 6th time in a row to Telluride. All of us shared a 3-story (Plunge, Unit #3), 4-bedroom condo unit that included a full kitchen, 3 separate bathrooms and a radiant floor heating system with a gas fireplace, cable TV and ski-in/out access to the slopes. The group flew in from the Dallas/Ft Worth (DFW) airport direct to Montrose, CO and rode a private shuttle to Telluride, stopping for a grocery and booze run in Montrose before heading to the lodge. I usually drive there myself and meet them at the Montrose AP and bring the non-perishable stuff, extra cooking gear and my vehicle gives us extra local transportation, if needed. The weather this year was spectacular with sunny days the whole time and a good snow base at the upper slopes, so the skiing was great. We got into town several times for some shopping taking the gondola into town right from the lodge. Telluride has upgraded many of its shops and facilities and seems to be thriving on the tourism industry, both in the summer and winter. Of course, we cooked most of our meals right at the condo. We were plagued again by ski injuries (bumps & bruises), but that comes with only skiing just once a year. Not too many ski slopes in Texas. Overall, it was a great ski adventure and maybe Jackson Hole, Wyoming next year….We’ll see.

Album Summary - I’ve included the past 9 ski events to show where the group has gone skiing in past years and those who made the trip. The albums are arranged with the most recent event first. Double-Click on the album cover to view the photos within each album. Enjoy . . . JDT

GALLERY 29 - 2016 Yellowstone National Park Photo Workshop, Canyon Village - 18- 23 June, 2016.

Introduction - 7 people signed up for the 6-day 2016 Yellowstone National Park Photography Workshop held from the 18th thru the 23rd of June, 2016, based out of Canyon Village Lodge, which is located in the east central portion of Yellowstone National Park near the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The event was led by professional photographer Don Mammoser and his wife and assistant, Anya from Parker, Colorado. Activities included sunrise and early evening shoots within Yellowstone National Park traveling by carpool to the various locations because of heavy visitor traffic and limited parking. We were early enough in the morning to avoid the crowds, but the afternoon and late evening shoots were challenging because of the large crowds at the favorite locations. Highlights of the workshop included: Day 01 - Met in the evening at the lounge area of the Canyon Village Lodge at 6:00 pm for group introductions, tentative schedule and an overview of planned workshop activities. Day 02 - It was an early morning departure for a sunrise shoot from the boardwalk loop at West Thumb Geyser Basin as the rising sun peeked thru the steaming clouds rising form the many geyser pools and the sun reflecting off placid Yellowstone Lake. Later that morning, we hiked the 1-mile boardwalk to the rainbow-colored Morning Glory Pool located in the Old Faithful area and had a group photo sharing session back at the hotel in the afternoon before heading out for a sunset shoot at the Grand Prismatic Spring located in Midway Geyser Basin. Day 03 - Early morning shoot at the overlook located at the North Rim of Yellowstone Canyon with views of the majestic lower falls of the Yellowstone River followed by a late morning drive along Hayden Valley stopping along the way to shoot wildlife and waterfowl on the way to the roaring steam vents located at Sulfur Caldron. That afternoon we drove west to Morris Junction arriving at Artists’ Paint Pots with its numerous geyser vents, brightly colored pools and elevated boardwalk overlooking the area. That evening we drove further north to Lower Mammoth Hot Springs and the Palette Springs area viewing the yellow and red-brown terraced limestone formations.  Day 04 - Early morning shoot along the boardwalks at Midway Geyser Basin with its forest of dead trees among steaming multi-colored sulfur pools, followed by a visit to Black Sand Basin located along the banks of Iron Creek Spring in Lower Geyser Basin. That afternoon following a group photo critique, we headed out to Old Faithful, but because of the huge crowds that had already gathered, we were only able to get at one end or the other of the viewing area because of our bulky tripods. The scheduled eruption was great, but only part of the group had luckily located at the north end of the viewing area and got the rainbow effect because of the sun angle. After Old Faithful, we headed for a late evening shoot at the Grand Prismatic Spring with the sun setting as the huge geyser pool filled to the brim, then erupted as the sun set on the horizon…great stuff. Day 05 - The final scheduled field shoots began at sunrise along Alum Creek located within Heyden Valley with the sun breaking thru the fog-shrouded tree lines and night-time frost still glistening on the plants located along the narrow pathway overlooking the river plain. The last shoot was at the North Rim Yellowstone Canyon with grandiose views of the Lower Falls and its steep canyon walls. The formal workshop ended after the shoot around 11:00 am with check-out/departures on your own.

Event Summary - The gallery contains photographs taken each day of the event beginning with a schedule of that day’s activities, a map of where we went and photos of the participants showing field conditions encountered, photographic equipment used and the instructors interfacing with the participants. GALLERY 28 - 2016 Grand Teton National Park Photo Workshop, Jackson, WY - 14-18 June, 2016.

Introduction - 5 people had signed up for the 2016 Grand Teton National Park Photography Workshop held from the 14th-16th of June, 2016, based out of the Antler Inn, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, with the town located at the base of the Grand Teton Mountains just south of the National Park. The event was led by professional photographer Don Mammoser and his wife and assistant Anya, who are based out of Parker, Colorado. Workshop activities included early morning sunrise and evening shoots along the Teton Valley and the Snake River that flows along the valley floor. The views were breathtaking of the snow-capped peaks with the lakes and river in the foreground. Highlights of the workshop included: Day 01 - Met at the reception room, Antler Inn at 6:00 pm for group introductions, proposed schedule and an overview of planned workshop activities. Day 02 - Began with a sunrise shoot of the Tetons from Schwabacher’s Landing as the rising sun highlighted the tops of the peaks with their reflections in the misty reed-banked Snake River. That afternoon, we had a group photo sharing session back at the hotel followed by a sunset shoot at the famous Oxbow Bend located along the Snake River.  Day 03 - Early morning shoot along Mormon Row and the famous pioneer settlement barns as foreground with the Grand Teton Mountains in the background. The early morning fog that formed at the base of the mountains made for spectacular photography, especially as the sun rose and the fog started to dissipate. That afternoon, we walked the nature trails of the Lawerance E. Rockerfeller Preserve looking for wildlife and native flowers in bloom. The evening shoot was at the Snake River Overlook in the same location where Ansel Adams took his famous black and white photos. Trees have since grown up at that location to block the views he saw, but you could get some of the S-curve of the river with the mountains in the background if you moved around a bit. Day 04 - Again, an early morning sunrise shoot at Schwabacher’s Landing, but this time we got there early enough to stake-out the best spots as it seems to be a popular place for photographers and space is limited along the riverbank with so few open spaces. That afternoon, everyone submitted photos for a group critique followed by a photo training session on landscape photography techniques. The late afternoon photo shoot was along the trail leading to Jenny Lake. Day 05 - The final field shoots began at sunrise along Oxbow Bend again with some wildlife along the riverbanks and on to Jackson Lake with views of the distant Teton Range from the base of the dam that forms the lake and the mountains reflecting in the foreground. The workshop ended after the shoot around 11:00 am with check-out/departure on your own.

Event Summary - The gallery contains photographs taken each day of the event beginning with a schedule of that day’s activities, a map of where we went, and photographs of the participants showing field conditions encountered, photographic equipment used and the instructors interfacing with the participants. The gallery provides a documentary of where we went, what we did and the photographic opportunities each of us experienced during the event. All of us want to especially thank Don and Anya Mammoser for their guidance, patience and photography tips they provided, which allowed us to properly capture the photographic moments we experienced during the workshop. Thanks again, Don and Anya, for the photographic opportunities you provided us during the event.…..JDT

GALLERY 27 - 2016 Orbridge Wolves Of Yellowstone Expedition - 13-19 January, 2016.

Introduction - The Orbridge Wolves of Yellowstone Expedition held from the 13th-19th of January, 2016 included 15 members of the Texas A&M University Traveling Aggies accompanied by Hannah Johnston, our hostess representing the Association of Former Students. Highlights of the tour included: Day 01 - The tour began in downtown Jackson Hole, Wyoming at the historic Wort Hotel with its famous Silver Dollar Saloon and Silver Dollar Bar with an evening group reception with snacks/refreshment and introduction to the tour staff. The schedule, anticipated wx conditions and tour highlights were covered followed by dinner on our own at the hotel or in town. Day 02 - The winter wonderland adventure began the next morning traveling by van north from Jackson Hole into the Grand Teton National Park arriving at the privately-owned Flagg Ranch for a lunch stop before entering Yellowstone Park. We stopped at the boundary entrance to Yellowstone briefly for a group picture, then on to the Old Faithful Snow Lodge for an evening layover. Along the way, we stopped for a short walk along the West Thumb Geyser Basin Loop Trail for a sneak preview of steaming geyser pools and mystic frost covered ghost-like trees sprinkled with frozen geyser mist. We arrived at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge in time for a 5:05 pm winter-time evening eruption of Old Faithful, which is most spectacular because of the huge steam cloud that forms when the outside temperature is so low….and there were no crowds, just us…what a spectacular view for our pleasure.  Day 03 - The next day it was onward to the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel, but by tracked vans this time because the roads beyond Old Faithful are not maintained in the wintertime. Along the way we stopped at Norris Geyser Basin for a short walk among the geyser pools but were stopped in our tracks by a small group of bison parked on the boardwalks. We quickly formed up for a group picture, then had to bail out when the bison decided they wanted to join us and be in the picture too….not!!! It’s funny now, but pretty exciting then. Along the way, we took a detour east to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone stopping at the Canyon Lodge for a box lunch, then viewing the frozen Lower Falls first from the south rim Artists’ Point and, of course, took another group picture, then traveled to the North Rim for a view from Lookout Point of the river canyon below. Days 04 and 05 - The next two days included ventures from Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel into Lemar Valley for wolf spotting accomplished by professional naturalist guides and lectures of the successful reintroduction of predator animals into Yellowstone National Park. Radio collars on selected wolf-pack animals were used to locate the wolf packs and we witnessed from a distance using 40x to 80x spotting scopes an attempted bison kill by the 12-member Mollies Wolf Pack (unsuccessful) and the next day an elk feeding by the same pack from an early morning kill. We noted a total of 28 wolf sightings among the 3 packs we observed in 2 days to include an attempted bison kill and an elk feeding with some of the wolf pups frolicking about after the feeding. It was absolutely fantastic. We were very lucky as noted by our tour guides as the wx was cooperative with no wind and the warming sun bursting out from the clouds for great visibility. Each day our guides kept us into the moment with fascinating stories of the drama and some of the tragedies among the wolf packs that occurred during the short 7-year history of the Yellowstone Wolf Pack Reintroduction Program. We all enjoyed the tailgate picnic lunches we had in the field each day with hot coffee, hot chocolate, tea and the make-your-own sandwiches and especially the cookies for dessert. Great stuff. Day 06 - The last day we packed-up and traveled to Bozeman, MT by coach, checked into the C’m-On Inn followed by an after-hours private tour of the world-famous dinosaur collection at the Museum of the Rockies by a graduate student from Montana State University. After the tour, we held our farewell dinner at the museum reception room and gave thanks to our Expedition Leader and Traveling Aggie Hostess for our outstanding adventure into the winter wonderland and breath-taking beauty of Yellowstone National Park..…..JDT

GALLERY 26 - 2016 Winter Animals Triple D Game Farm Photo Workshop - 8-11 January, 2016.

Introduction - 5 people had signed up for the 2016 Triple D Winter Animals Wildlife Photography Workshop held from the 8th-11th of January, 2016, located just on the east outskirts of Kalispell, Montana. The event was led by professional wildlife photographer Jeff Wendorff, who has led countless photo workshops at the Triple D Game Farm for many years. Workshop activities included morning and afternoon wildlife shoots from selected locations at the Triple D Game Farm to include: Day 01 - Began with a 6:00 pm initial evening orientation meeting at the business center, Holiday Inn Express in Kalispell for group introductions, review of the proposed schedule, briefing on wildlife safety and an overview of the planned workshop activities for each day. Day 02 - Started with a 7:45 am morning safety briefing at the Triple D Game Farm reception area for a 9:00 am departure for a morning shoot of a Siberian Tiger and Mountain Lion in winter settings. In the afternoon after lunch, we went back out to the field to another location to shoot a Bobcat and a pair of Arctic Foxes. Later that afternoon, we attended a group photo session and critique let by the instructor back at the Holiday Inn.  Day 03 - It was a 9:15 am departure for a morning shoot at a remote location of a Red Fox in winter conditions and Wolf Reflections along a pond’s edge. Later that afternoon, we shot a Canadian Lynx and Snow Leopard against snow-covered drifts. GALLERY 25 - 2015 Colorado Fall Colors Photo Workshop - 26-30 September, 2015.

Introduction - 3 people had signed up for the 2015 Colorado Fall Color Photography Workshop held from the 26th-30th of September, 2015, based out of the Victorian Inn, Ouray, Colorado, centrally located at the heart of the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado. The event was led by professional photographer Don Mammoser and his wife and assistant Anya, who are based out of Parker, Colorado. Workshop activities included early morning sunrise and evening shoots along the multiple high line jeep trails that traversed the former mining areas and numerous mountain streams that flow from the surrounding peaks. The fall colors were breathtaking this particular week because the nightly frosts at the higher altitudes had just begun and high winds had not blown the leaves off the trees yet. It was absolutely the perfect time of year for spectacular fall colors in the high Colorado mountains surrounding Ouray. Highlights of the workshop included: Day 01 - Met at the reception room, Victorian Inn at 6:00 pm for group introductions, tentative schedule and an overview of planned workshop activities. Day 02 - Began with a sunrise shoot from the Dallas Divide overview area as the rising sun highlighted the rows of the yellow-, red- and orange-colored aspens located beneath the towering snow-capped San Juan Mountains, followed by mid-morning views of aspen groves located along the West Fork Dallas Creek. That afternoon, we had a group photo sharing session back at the hotel reception area followed by an early afternoon photo shoot at Crystal Lake located south of Ouray just off Colorado Highway 550.  Day 03 - Early morning shoot along the Last Dollar Road traveling all the way south and east to the town of Telluride with views of the San Miguel River as it flows below Bridal Veil Falls. Day 04 - Again, an early morning sunrise shoot along Owl Creek Pass located east of the town of Ridgeway with views among multicolored aspen groves. That afternoon, everyone submitted 10 photos for critique followed by a photo training session on HDR and panoramic stitching techniques. Day 05 - The final field shoot began at sunrise along Yankee Boy Basin followed by check-out/departure on your own.

All of us want to especially thank Don and Anya Mammoser for their guidance, patience and photography tips they provided expanding our technical knowledge, which allowed us to properly capture the photographic moments we experienced during the workshop. Thanks again, Don and Anya, for your patience and professional insight which benefitted each one of us on this photographic adventure you provided us.…..JDT

GALLERY 23- 2015 Best Of Ireland Tour - 17-24 July, 2015.

Introduction - The 8-day 2015 Best of Ireland Tour held from the 17th-24th of July, 2015 included a selection of Ireland’s significant historical sites starting at Dublin, birthplace of the Irish Rebellion, then clockwise around the perimeter of the island with lodging at some of the most charming B&B’s located within the coastal region, with a generous introduction to traditional Irish folk music performed at the local pubs during the evenings. The tour was led by Cathie Ryan, well-known Irish vocalist who has recorded 5 of her own albums, and teaches Irish history to various alumni groups. The tour group was small, 20 total, so we were able to get group tickets to the Riverdance 20th Anniversary performance in Dublin, attend two Irish folk song concerts in Dingle and we were able to get seating for the group dinners without overpacking the restaurant. in addition, there was plenty of room on our coach to spread out and really enjoy the views. While traveling on the coach, Cathie would play traditional Irish songs integrated with historic and local commentary and even sing a few of her own songs while traveling between locations. We were all thrilled to “special treats” at each location based on her knowledge of Irish folklore, the local culture/traditions and she knew most of the local performers at the pub concerts. She was even requested to sing along with several of the performers, which was most impressive. Each experience was “special” for everyone on the tour. Each day was jammed-packed with guided walking tours narrated by local tour guides at each location, transportation by dedicated coach to the next town for lodging, which included either a full buffet Irish breakfast or the option to order from the B&B menu for specialty items. There was even a “free day” where you could venture on your own or just relax, shop or pursue your own local interest. We all want to especially thank Cathie and Tina for our exceptional tour of Ireland, for their expertise, extensive knowledge of Irish culture, history, traditions and gracious patience when we would ask over and over, “what was that time we are supposed to meet for our departure?”….well done Cathie and Tina…and don’t forget Stephen, our driver. Day 01 - Arrival at the Dublin IAP and transfer to the Cassidy’s Hotel located in downtown Dublin with the rest of the afternoon on your own. Evening welcome reception and group introductions hosted by Cathie Ryan and Tina Hiti, followed by a group dinner within walking distance at the local Le Bon Crubeen Restaurant Bar. Day 02 - Breakfast buffet followed by a guided walking tour of Dublin to include the Gov’t Post office (GPO), site of the Irish Rebellion, the O’Connell and Ha’ Penny Bridges, spanning the River Liffey, views of Dublin Castle; and finally, Trinity College containing the Book of Kells and the Long Room Library where portions of the Harry Potter movie scenes were filmed. The rest of the afternoon was on your own and included a visit to Saint Stevens Botanical Park and the Little Museum of Dublin to view historical documents dating from the Irish Rebellion to J.F. Kennedy’s historic visit to Ireland.  Day 03 - It was breakfast buffet, check out and depart by coach for Kinsale, Ireland traveling thru the rolling green countryside of Tipperary. Just outside of Dublin we stopped at the Glasnevin Cemetery for a guided walking tour where many of Ireland’s national heroes were enshrined. We stopped for lunch at the Rock Shop located adjacent to the Rock of Cashel, a palace fortress established during the time of St. Patrick now under extensive restoration. After arrival and check-in at the Friar’s Lodge in Kinsale, we had a short orientation walk into town for a group dinner Max’s Bristo. We ended the day with a fun-filled bumper car ride at the local amusement park and an optional evening ”Ghost Walk”. Day 04 - After the breakfast buffet, we began a walking tour of Kinsale stopping at Charles Fort, which guards the entrance to the harbor town. Lunch and dinner was on your own. Day 05 - After breakfast and checking out, we departed for Dingle traveling thru the Killarney Nat’l Park. Along the way, we stopped at Kenmare, center of the Irish Lace making industry, viewed an ancient Stone Circle and stopped at the Kissane Sheep Farm to view sheep dogs in action and a shearing demonstration. We also stopped at the Muckross House estates, viewing the beautiful lake gardens. After arrival and check-in at the Castlewood House & Heaton B&B, we strolled thru town stopping for a group dinner at Fenton’s Restaurant followed by an optional traditional Irish musical jam session at Siopa Ceol, a local pub bar. Day 06 - After breakfast, we visited the Dingle Crystal Shop with casting and etching demonstrations, drove along Slea Head Drive stopping for ocean views along the overhanging cliffs. We stopped at the Great Blasket Center for a curator-guided walking tour of the facility, walked thru the Reask Stone Circle, viewed the Gallarus Oratory Site and visited the Kilmakedar Church Cemetery. Back at Dingle, it was dinner on your own with an optional Irish Musical Concert at the St. James Church. Day 07 - It was a free day in Dingle and I visited the Dingle Distillery and learned about Irish whiskey making and, of course, had to sip a few samples provided at the end of the tour. Day 08 - After breakfast and check-out, we departed for Galway with a ferry ride across the Shannon River into Clare County stopping for a guided walking tour of the visitor center and views of the Cliffs of Moher with lunch on your own. After arrival in Galway and check-in at the Petra House,, we had a group dinner at McSwiggan’s, a local pub with refreshment and musical entertainment for all….JDT.

Day 05 - The day started with a sunrise shoot at Herbert Lake followed by a climb along the trail to the Peyto Lake Overview vantage point where we took a group photo. A final critique that afternoon finished the group sessions and a final farewell dinner that evening culminated the social events. Day 06 - The final field shoot was at sunrise at Vermillion Lake No. 1 and ended the workshop events with check-out and departure on your own.

Event Summary - Each gallery contains photographs taken each day of the event beginning with a schedule of that day’s activities, a map of where we went, and photographs of the participants showing field conditions encountered, photographic equipment used and the instructors interfacing with the participants. The gallery provides a documentary of where we went, what we did and the photographic opportunities each of us experienced during the event. All of us want to especially thank Don and Anya Mammoser for their guidance, patience and photography tips they provided expanding our technical knowledge, which allowed us to properly capture the photographic moments we experienced during the workshop. Thanks again, Don and Anya, for your patience and professional insight which benefitted each one of us on this spectacular photographic adventure.…..JDT

GALLERY 17 - 2014 to 2011 Canadian Jasper National Park - 3 Albums.

Gallery 03 - Introduction - After the Canadian Rockies photo workshop, I stayed a couple of days over and ventured over to Jasper National Park and checked into a bed & breakfast in the town of Jasper to be closer to the park. I had visited Jasper National Park in 2012 and wanted to go back to the places I had visited before to get some more shots of my favorite locations. On the way from Lake Louise to Jasper, I stopped at the Bow Lake Overview along Canadian Hwy 93 and got some shots of the Crowfoot Glacier at the far end of the lake and ducked into the Num Ti Jah Lodge for a quick lunch before heading out again. I stopped again at the Columbia Icefields viewing area for some quick landscape shots and then headed up the road to Sunwapta Falls. There is a short trail leading to the fall chutes and there were few people there, so I was able to get some good moving water shots using my tripod and slow shutter speeds from the best locations. Further up the road on my way to Jasper, I stopped by Athabasca Falls to get more moving water shots. The trail here was more extensive and crossed the river several times and I got some good river shots from the bridge overlooking the falls. The falls here are more extensive and wider making them more spectacular. It was time to call it a day and check-in at the bed & breakfast in Jasper and hit the road early the next morning. The next day started early arriving before sunrise at Edith Lake to catch first light over the lake and I also got some wildlife shots of an elk herd, then drove the short distance to Pyramid Lake to get some morning reflection shots off the lake with the mountain peaks in the background. There is a small island along the shoreline with a bridge leading to it and the island has some historical significance as it is a favorite visitor picnic spot and for private wedding ceremonies. The last day started out early with me catching the first boat ride from the docks at Lake Maligne that crosses the lake in a 1-hour boat ride to Spirit Island. The first boat ride is early enough to catch the rising sun as it tops the distant mountain peaks, so you get some great shots of the towering Canadian Rockies as you head southeast towards the island. There is only a 30-minute stop at the island, so you have to hustle to get your shots in before you have to board for the return trip. A famous Canadian photographer took photos of Spirit Island in the foreground surrounded by the mountains, which became the poster for tourism to the Canadian Rockies and Jasper National Park. The boat ride is well worth the trip….if the sun is out. Fortunately for me, puffy clouds were in the background….good stuff.

GALLERY 16 - 2014 Caras Nursery Macro Photography Session, Missoula, MT - 31 July, 2014.

Introduction - The Caras Nursery and Landscape, located at 2727 3rd Street, W, Missoula, Montana is a third-generation, family-owned business that has been in operation in Montana since 1896. The facility maintains a retail garden center stocked with common garden tools and supplies, extensive greenhouse facilities offering a wide selection of plants, trees, shrubs, bushes and vines, and provides contracted personalized landscaping services. I visited the facility on July 31st, 2014, and got permission to use my new 77mm +5 achromatic macro filter for my Nikon 28-300mm FX zoom lens and recently purchased Nikon 105mm, f2.8 micro-lens for some close-up and macro-photography. The garden facility had numerous statues on display throughout the yard for an upcoming garden show and wanted some photographs of the displays before they were placed on sale. I’ve separated the photos into two sets, one for the facility and displays and the other for the macro and close-up photography. (ref: www.carasnursery.com, About Us/Home).

GALLERY 15 - Tuscany, Italy Photo Workshop - 6-16 May, 2014

Introduction - 6 people signed up for the 2014 Tuscany Photo Workshop held from the 6th thru the 16th of May 2014, that included 3 nites in Florence, Italy and 6 nites in the small town of Pienza centrally located in the Tuscany countryside. The event was led by professional photographer Don Mammoser from Parker, Colorado. Activities included sunrise and sunset shoots from various vantage points in Florence to include Piazza Michaelangelo overlooking the Arno River and the Florence skyline, street shots from the Piazza del Duomo and inside the cathedral, the courtyard of Basilica San Lorenzo and busy adjacent marketplace, sunset shots from the Ponte S. Trinita Bridge, morning shots at the historic Ponte Vecchio Bridge, tour of the Basilica di Santa Croce Cathedral, local sidewalk artists, performers and vendors and views of the city and surrounding countryside from atop the Campanile Bell Tower. Most locations were within a short walking distance from the Cali Hotel centrally located just north of the river and adjacent to the Piazza del Duomo in the heart of Florence. From Florence, the tour continued with a 4-hr ride to the Tuscany countryside located southeast from Florence by rental van to relocate at the Camere Andrei B&B in Pienza. The journey included a photo/lunch stop at the charming stone wall city of San Gimignano with a grand view of the city from the Torre Grosa Tower, followed by a group dinner at a local restaurant in Pienza after our arrival/check-in. Local trips from Pienza included a day drive to the nearby town of Siena with panoramic views from the Torre del Mangia Tower, a flag-twisting/marching band festival and a central market district, drives to the nearby villages of San Quirico D’Orcia, Volterra and a guided vineyard tour/wine tasting event at the family-owned/operated La Fontace Burnello Winery. Each day included frequent stops along countryside hilltops with spectacular panoramic views of adjacent grain fields filled with fresh blooming spring flowers for landscape and macro photography shots. In between photo shoots, we had three photo sharing sessions with each participant showing their favorite shots to date for viewing and critique. And of course, we experienced the many local ice-cream, expresso and deli shops to sample the world-famous Tuscan-style cuisine, locally produced wines and hundreds of gelato ice-cream flavors.

Event Summary - The gallery contains photographs taken each day of the event beginning with a schedule of that day’s activities, a map of where we went, and photographs of the participants showing field conditions encountered, photographic equipment used and the instructor interfacing with the participants. The gallery provides a documentary of where we went, what we did and the photographic opportunities each of us experience during the event. I want of especially thank Don Mammoser for this leadership during the week driving the six of us through Florence and throughout the Tuscany landscape during the tour and for his in-depth guidance and instruction to improve our insight, technical knowledge and proper use of our equipment to capture the magic moments we experienced. Hand-held shots were encouraged especially in the marketplaces and during festival events where a tripod would have been most difficult. Thanks again, Don for your patience and professional insight which benefitted each one of us on this spectacular photographic adventure…..JDT

GALLERY 14 - 2014 Arches National Park and Dead Horse Point - 15-17 March, 2014.

Introduction - After the 2014 Moab Skinny Tire Bike festival, I stayed over for two more days and visited Arches National Park and made trips out to some of my favorite locations for some sunrise and sunset shots as well as some great panoramic shots. There was still some snow on the distant La Sal Mountains providing some spectacular background views. The first day I stopped at the Visitors Center for some inside shots and got some information when the best lighting conditions were for each of the arches from the Park Rangers. It was already late afternoon when I left, so I stopped by the La Sal Mountains Overlook for some mountain shots and then headed out to Balanced Rock for some evening sunset shots. Good stuff. The next day began early as I headed out before sunrise to the Windows Arch Section and joined the group of photographers (at least 20) that were already packed under the North Window Arch waiting for the morning sun to arc from the top of the arch and suddenly highlight Turret Arch in the distance, which only lasts a few minutes or so as the sun crests behind you. It’s a famous shot. I did get the shot from below, but the best location was higher up on the rocks, which was jam packed with photographers and tripods shoulder-to-shoulder. I guess you have to get there before 3:00 am to get a good spot for the 2-minute shot. In my next life, maybe. Following that, I hiked the short distance to Double Arch that was already highlighted in the morning sun. After lunch, I made the trek and steep climb up to Delicate Arch, stopping briefly at the historic Wolfe Ranch located at the beginning of the trail for some photos. Once at the top of the butte in view of the famous arch depicted on Utah license plates, you had to move around a lot to keep the crowds of people already there out of the pictures. Most pose for selfies at the base, so patience is required to get a clear shot. The best shot was the La Sal Mountains in the background centered in the middle of the arch. I finished the afternoon at the Firey Furnace Overlook with some good panoramic shots and then hiked the short distance out to Landscape Arch for some more panoramas. It was getting late in the day, and I wanted to get some sunset shots, so I headed out to the Dead Horse Point State Park that overlooks the Green River and Colorado River Canyons intersection below and it was well worth the trip. It turned out to be a great 2 days for photography, and I certainly made the most of it.

The event was led by professional photographer Rod Barbee, who lives in Port Ludlow, Washington. The 5-day photographic adventure included a mixture of field shoots including a trip up to Bryce Canyon National Park for a morning sunrise shoot and classroom lectures on better landscape composition, advanced exposure techniques and the use of manual camera settings. There were two instructor-led critiques of participant submitted images. Day 01 - Arrival Springdale, Utah, check into lodge, attend 5:00 pm evening group meeting in the lodge conference room. Instructor led an introduction and orientation briefing, went over the proposed schedule and covered safety considerations. Dinner on your own. Day 02 - Early morning departure for a sunrise shoot at the Towers of the Virgin. Boarded the park shuttle bus (personal vehicles are not allowed in this section of the park) for a morning shoot at the Court of the Patriarchs. Returned to the lodge and prepared for the 1:00 - 4:00 pm lecture and photo critique (5 images). After the lecture, boarded the park shuttle bus for late evening shoots at the Temple of Sinwava and the Canyon Junction Bridge where Pine Creek empties into the North Fork of the Virgin River. Returned to the lodge and dinner on your own. Day 03 - Early morning group departure for Bryce Canyon National Park for early morning shoots from the canyon rim overlooking the towering hoodoos below as the sun crests highlighting the canyon below first from Sunset Point and then moving to Observation Point. Returned to Zion National Park for lunch on your own and late afternoon shoots at the Pine Creek Bridge at Canyon Junction and further up the Virgin River at Big Bend. Boarded the bus and returned back to the lodge. Day 04 - Early morning departure and hike along the Canyon Overlook Trail for a sunrise shoot from the Canyon Overlook Viewpoint. The view below is along the wide river valley formed between the intersection of Pine Creek and the Virgin River and presents a spectacular panoramic view of the valley below. We returned to the lodge and prepared photos for the second critique following a lecture from 12:00 - 3:00 pm. After the critique, we left at 4:00 pm for afternoon field shoots at the Court of the Patriarchs and Weeping Rock. That evening we met for a farewell group dinner at the Zion Canyon Brew Pub as the workshop would end at noon after the next day’s morning shoot. Day 05 - Early morning departure to the Towers of the Virgin and the Temple of Sinwava for sunrise and early morning shots. Workshop ended after the field shoots. I elected to stay over at the lodge for another three days and spend time exploring the area on my own.

GALLERY 11 - 2013 Zion National Park & Bryce Canyon National Park - 3-5 November, 2013.

Introduction - After the Zion National Park Photo Workshop, I stayed an extra 3 days and went back to some of the same locations and spent more time there on my own and got some great shots that I had missed during the workshop. Day 01 - I spent the first day hiking the 2-mile roundtrip trail following along the north fork of the Virgin River shooting scenery shots at the Riverside Walk, Weeping Wall and Swamp Area all the way up to the Canyon Narrows Trail Entrance and back. The leaves had not dropped from the trees along the canyon, and the fall colors really highlighted the scenery shots. Good stuff….!! Day 02 - The next day I headed to the east side of the park driving thru the mile long tunnel system that had been constructed in the 1930s to allow tourists access to the east side of the park and further on to Bryce Canyon National Park. My first stop was at the 1.0 mi Canyon Overlook Trail and I climbed about halfway up and got some great rock formation shots along the way. I spotted 2 bighorn sheep on the other side of the canyon and got a few shots before they scampered off. My next stop was at Checkerboard Mesa with its unique sandstone crossbedding pattern forming squares much like a checkerboard. I also got some shots of weathered tree stumps that had been uprooted forming weird shapes and photographed some of the typical desert vegetation along the way. My final stop was at the 1.5 mi Emerald Pools Trail that leads to 3 pools that are spring fed providing year-round water for animals, which is rare in this desert climate. I got to all three pools, Lower, Middle and Upper Pools, which were very low this time of year. The canyon views below you at the Upper Pool were spectacular and well worth the trip. Day 03 - The last day I headed out to Bryce Canyon National Park driving thru the east tunnel system stopping for some winter shots at the Seiver River Overlook with fresh frost and some light snow still on the ground along the riverbanks. Along the way I stopped in at the Ruby’s Inn known for its famous country breakfasts and western decor since 1923 when it first opened as a tourist rest stop. After a great breakfast, I headed into the park to Sunset Point for the spectacular views of the winter snow-covered hoodoo towers spread below you from the canyon rim overlook viewpoint. We had been at this same location during the photo workshop, but I wanted to hike below on some of the trails to get closer and among the giant formations. So, I headed out on the 1.3-mile Navajo Loop Trail. My first stop was at the Wall Street where I got some shots of the tall narrow pine trees poking up thru the narrow canyon walls seeking the sunlight. My next stop was at the Benchmark (a National Park elevation survey disk) and I got some spectacular shots of the towering hoodoos that surround this location. My last stop was at Two Bridges to view an upper and a lower archway reaching between the narrow canyon walls looking like two bridges. I got some great shots on the hike out of the canyon with fresh snow covering the towering red sandstone rock formations that surround you. It was well worth the trek, and I have the photos to prove it…..JDT !!!.

GALLERY 10 - 2013 Grand Teton National Park Photo Workshop - 15-21 September, 2013.

Introduction - 16 people signed up for the Rocky Mountain School of Photography (RMSP) 2013 Grand Teton National Park Photo Workshop held from the 15th to the 21st of September, 2013 based out of the Alpenhof Lodge located in Teton Village on the outskirts of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The workshop was led by RMSP landscape specialist Doug Johnson and assisted by Jen Mefford. The 7-day photographic adventure included a mixture of daily localized field trips to include a short trip up to Yellowstone National Park to the West Thumb Geyser Basin with its numerous geyser pools and classroom lectures with photo critiques in between the field trips. Lecture topics included: (1) tips on better landscape photography composition, (2) using the lighting zone system for manual exposure settings, (3) how and when to use high-dynamic range (HDR) exposure techniques in harsh lighting conditions and, (4) the use of graduated neutral density filters for exposure compensation. There were 4 instructor-led critiques of attendee submitted photos usually after the classroom lectures. Day 01 - Arrive Jackson Hole, Wy, check-into lodge and attend the 7:00 pm initial group meeting in the lodge conference room for introductions, proposed schedule, itinerary, carpooling and field safety considerations. Dinner on your own at the lodge or in the village. Day 02 - Early morning departure for a sunrise shoot at the historic Mormon Row with its 1896 preserved Moulton Barns, horse corals and picket fences with the morning sun creeping down the towering majestic Grand Teton mountains in the background. There was some light ground fog in the valley beneath the mountains as the sun was coming up creating a surreal mystic setting. What a great start…!!! It was back to the lodge for breakfast on your own and a class lecture from 12:30 - 3:00 pm at the lodge conference room to include our first critique of 3 images at the end of the lectures. After the critique, we headed further north into the park from 4:30 until 7:30 pm to String Lake hiking along the trail for photos along the shoreline with Grand Teton Mountains reflections mirroring in the foreground. It was back to the lodge for dinner on your own. Day 03 - Early morning departure heading into the park to the Oxbow Bend Viewpoint located along the Snake River for some sunrise shots with the Grand Tetons in the background reflecting off the winding river channel. We stopped at the Jackson Lake Lodge located in the park for their fabulous breakfast buffet and after breakfast went outside and took some landscape shots of the meadowlands just outside the lodge with the Tetons in the background. At noon, we headed north from the Jackson Lake Lodge exiting Grand Teton NP traveling along the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Parkway entering Yellowstone National Park from the south entrance. We stopped briefly along the way at the Lewis Lake bridge for some waterfall shots before arriving at the West Thumb Geyser Basin located in the southwest corner of Yellowstone Lake. There is a loop trail within the Central Basin area and along the lake shoreline where you can view percolating springs, steaming fumaroles, numerous geyser pools and paint pots located along the trail. About two-thirds in, there was a large bull elk blocking the wooden plank trail that notified us it was his trail and not to tread any further. Complied with. On our way back to Grand Teton NP, we stopped at the J. Pierce Cunningham Ranch historic site for some landscape shots before heading back to the lodge. Day 04 - The morning shoot to Lupine Meadows was weather cancelled for rainstorms, so we had some free time before classroom lectures starting at 10:00 am, a lunch break and more classroom lectures with a photo critique of 4 images. At 5:00 pm after the rain cleared, we headed back out into the field for black & white only photos at Blacktail Ponds and a night shoot using flashlights to light-paint the Mormon Row Barns. Day 05 - Again, an early morning departure carpooling to Jenny Lake for a sunrise shoot along the misty fog-shrouded lake shoreline. It was back to the lodge for a 1:00 - 3:00 pm 3-image critique and a 4:30 pm departure for the Chapel of the Transfiguration photo shoot and to the historic 1892 Menor’s Ferry Site. The site was used by early traveling pioneers for crossing the Snake River and contains restored barns, a settler’s cabin, smokehouse, horse corals, cable crossing winches and a former general store. Our last shoot for the day was at the Episcopal Chapel of the Transfiguration both from inside and around the historic church set in beautiful surroundings. Day 06 - Our last day in the field was at the Schwabacher’s Landing site located along the Snake River for an early morning shoot. Highlights included reflections of the distant sun-lit Grand Tetons along the shallow riverbanks reflecting off no-wind perfectly calm waters. A near-full moon with clear skies above reflecting off a beaver pond as we hiked into the site before the sun came up made for some pretty good shots. We headed back at 9:00 am for a 1:00 - 3:00 pm lecture with a 6-image photo critique back at the lodge. We ended the day with a group farewell dinner at the famous Silver Dollar Saloon in downtown Jackson Hole. Day 07 - Final day of the workshop included submitting 15 images for a final slideshow presentation, an event summary, lecture handouts and a wrap-up of the workshop highlights with the slideshow presentation. GALLERY 09 - 2013 Grand Teton National Park - 21-24 September, 2013.

Introduction - After the RMSP 2013 Grand Teton National Park Photo Workshop, I stayed two extra days in Jackson Hole and went back into the park to visit some of the same places we had been to during the workshop to spend more time there on my own. Day 01 - The first place I stopped was at the Craig Thomas National Park Discovery & Visitor Center to get an overview of the important park features, its historical geological formation, early settlement and development of the surrounding valley and view some of wildlife displays in their newly expanded renovated lobby. It was well worth the stop. The first place I visited was back to the Mormon Row Barns and shot some landscape shots and was fortunate enough to witness and got some shots of a local wedding ceremony being held at the barns including the newly wedded bride kissing the groom. How lucky can you get…!!!. Day 02 - On Day 2, I got an early start before sunrise and headed out to Schwabacher’s Landing hiking the trail following along the riverbank and got some low-light before sunrise landscape shots with the full moon above. It was nice not to wait for someone to move so that you can get a good shot yourself. On my way back to Jackson Hole, I stopped at the Glacier View Turnout for some panoramic and zoom-in shots of the few remaining glaciers among the peaks. The three that are remaining are getting smaller in volume but are still pretty large and impressive. Day 03 - It was my last day in the park, so I drove up to Oxbow Bend again and got some great shots of the sun highlighting a tree line on the opposite riverbank through the moving cloud cover with highlight reflections off the curving river channel very much like a fireworks display. All I could say was …Wow!!!! My next stop was at the Blacktail Ponds marshy swamp area where I got some good shots of local vegetation and some marshy areas along the trail. I made a quick stop at the Doran’s Original Moose Chuckwagon grill house for a bowl of really hot chili before heading to the Pacific Creek Boat Launch Landing that provides access to the Snake River down to Deadman’s Bar. You have to have a park river access permit to launch for safety reasons. There were some fishermen launching their boat and fly fishing for trout when I got there. I called it a day and headed back to pack for my return trip back home early the next day. Day 04 - I headed out from Jackson Hole before sunrise to avoid the tourist traffic. When I got on the other side of Teton Pass, elev. 8,431 ft, heading north on Hwy 33 thru the farmlands near Driggs, Utah on my way to IH 15 and Salt Lake City, the sun was rising to the east and breaking thru an intense cloud cover over the Tetons in the distance and I had to stop. I got some spectacular sunrise shots with highlighted farm meadows, grain silos and picket fences in the foreground. Pretty lucky….!!! Overall, it was a great adventure and I’m glad I stayed over for a few days.

GALLERY 08 - 2013 RMSP Intermediate Photography Workshop - 21-26 July, 2013.

Introduction - 16 people signed up for the Rocky Mountain School of Photography (RMSP) Intermediate Photography Workshop held from the 21st to the 26th of July, 2013. Daily classroom sessions were held at the downtown school’s location in Missoula, MT led by professional photographer Tony Rizzuto and assisted by Roxanne Duffy. Photo field trips were conducted in the local area with recommendations and technical assistance provided by the instructors. The classroom sessions included an introduction to macro photography, low light, night and abstract photography with an emphasis on using manual camera settings and the zone system for your initial exposure settings. Photo critiques of attendee submitted images were conducted each day during the workshop usually at the end of the lectures. Day 01 - The workshop began at 1:00 pm in the afternoon at the school classroom with group introductions, course overview, tentative schedule and itinerary followed by a classroom lecture on advanced exposure techniques. After a dinner break, the class met at 7:00 pm at the historic Fort Missoula Recreational Park for the first field shoot of the outdoor steam engine, rail depot, sawmill, logging, farm equipment and covered wagons on display in the park. The day ended with some good evening dusk shots. Day 02 - Classroom lectures on composition and elements of design began at 9:00 am followed by a lunch break at noon, a 1:00 - 3:00 pm photo critique (4 images), another break and then meet at 5:00 pm at the historic town of St. Ignatius for the second field shoot. Some of the best shots were from inside the 1841 Jesuit St Ignatius Mission, which is now a National Historical Site. The group met for an early dinner at the Old Timer Cafe in St Ignatius before heading to the nearby Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge. Large flocks of migrating waterfowl frequent the marshy areas and ponds surrounding the reservoir that was initially created for crop irrigation for the local Kootenai, Salish and Flathead Indian Tribes; and was designated a wildlife refuge in 1921 to preserve the habitat and surrounding ecology. The setting sun highlighted the expansive marshy cattail fields in the refuge with the Mission Mountains in the distance making for some great landscape shots. Day 03 - The group met at the Garnet Ghost Town at 9:00 am for a field shoot of the restored 1895 historic gold mining community. Rustic features included four restored general stores, four hotels, three livery stables, two barber shops, a former school, butcher shop, ore assay office and, of course, thirteen saloons. Plenty to shoot from inside or out. We met again back at the classroom for a 2:30 - 6:30 pm classroom lecture on macro photography followed by a photo critique (6 images). Day 04 - The day began with the group meeting at 8:00 am at the local Caras Nursery & Landscape for close-up and macro focused photography. We arrived at their office at opening time, so it wasn’t crowded and we spread out among the several green houses and outside garden areas for our close-up shots. It was back to the classroom for a 12:00 - 4:30 pm lecture on night photography and an extended photo critique session (13 images). We met again at 6:30 pm for a group dinner in town at the Cafe Roice and after dinner for a night shoot in the middle of town from 8:30- 10:00 pm. Day 05 - The group met at the historic former mining town of Philipsburg that first became the stagecoach stop then the railhead center for the mining industry booming from 1864 to the early 1900’s when local mining went bust. The downtown area has been restored as a National Historic Site with the old granite brick buildings restored to a 1900’s gas street light theme with antique autos parked along the sidewalks. Excellent photo ops…!!! We spent, however, more time in the Sweet Candy Shop than on the streets. Day 06 - The final day of the workshop began with the group meeting at 8:00 am at the Kootenai Creek Trailhead for landscape and bubbling stream shots along the creek trail. After lunch on your own, we met back at the classroom from 1:00 - 3:00 pm for a final photo critique (3 images) and a wrap-up. The workshop ended with a final slideshow presentation with highlights of our adventure and some candid shots of the participants taken by Roxanne. I learned a lot from the workshop particularly night and low light shooting techniques, macro photography and yes, I even took some abstract shots.

GALLERY 07 - 2013 RMSP Olympic National Park Photo Workshop - 25-31 May, 2013.

Introduction - This was my second photography field trip with the Rockey Mountain School of Photography (RMSP), the Olympic National Park Photo Workshop, which was held in Forks and Port Angeles, Washington from the 25th to the 31st of May, 2013. 8 people signed up for the workshop led by professional photographer Don Mammoser based out of Parker, Colorado. The workshop included daily field trips to various locations within the Olympic National Park, Quinault Rain Forest, Hoh Rain Forest and along the Pacific Coastal Beaches. The instructor provided both hands-on assistance and technical guidance while in the field and conducted group critiques of attendee submitted images during the workshop. Day 01 - Arrive Forks, Washington, check-into the Olympic Suites Inn and attend the initial group meeting held that evening from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Group introductions, proposed itinerary, schedule, carpooling and safety considerations were all covered in the meeting. Day 02 - We started early leaving at 600 am carpooling from Forks heading south along coastal Hw 101 to the Lake Quinault Lodge located along the southeast shoreline of the lake for our first field shoot. Lingering morning fog along the shoreline made for some excellent landscape shots and blooming rhododendrons sprinkled with morning dew were the top subjects. Our next stop further up the road was Merriman Falls for cascading waterfall and shots of moss-covered rocks, stumps and trees scattered all along the riverbed. We headed back to the hotel for a 2:00 - 4:00 pm group meeting showing a selection of our favorite photos and expressed our primary photo interests while attending the workshop. We headed out at 6:30 pm that evening to our second photo shot at Ruby Beach for sunset shots along the drift log covered beaches and tidal pools. Highlights included the tall sea stacks (large standing volcanic rock formations) along the beachfront and the huge stacks of drift logs that had piled up all along the coastline. Late evening fog hid the sun setting in the west, but it was our first beach shoot, so there would be other opportunities. Day 03 - Got an early morning 6:30 am start heading to the Hoh Rain Forest Visitor Center and hiking to the Hall of Mosses along the Hoh River Trail. Before we arrived, we pulled over and briefly stopped at the Monarch Sitka Spruce Tree display for a group picture of us huddled around the base of the 12 ft. diameter 500- to 550-year-old moss-covered giant. It’s one of the largest sitka spruce in the USA. The average rain fall posted at the Visitors Center for this area was 137.4 inches (11.5 feet) promoting moss-covered trees and the rain forest environment, especially evident along the Maple Grove Loop. We headed back to the hotel at 11:00 am and got ready for a 2:00 - 4:00 pm photo critique (8 images). At 6:00 pm we headed out again to Second Beach for a sunset shoot. The tide was out giving us plenty of room along the beach for panoramic shots of the sea stacks, beached log piles and explore the exposed tide pools for sea life. It was still foggy and overcast, so, rats…no sunset shots this second time. Day 04 - Another early morning 5:30 am start heading this time to a State Trust Forest Site managed by the non-profit Hoh River Trust conservancy under the Washington State Dept of the Interior to preserve the adjacent river ecosystem and wildlife habitat. We got some excellent shots of native plants, ferns, moss-covered stumps and tall standing trees that were all along the entrance road. It was back to the hotel, check-out and relocate to Port Angeles for the rest of the workshop. After check-in and settling in at the Red Lion Hotel, we headed out at 6:00 pm for an evening shoot driving up to the Hurricane Ridge Visitors Center to their lookout point parking lot for views of the majestic Olympic Mountains located just to the south. An evening fog was settling in giving a mystic setting to the snow-covered mountains located in the distance. Again, no sunset shots with overcast skies and the fog below. We headed back at 9:00 pm and I was able to get some nighttime shots of the harbor pier located just down from the hotel before calling it a day. Day 05 - We got an early morning 5:00 am start from Port Angeles driving along Hw 101 and around Lake Cresent to the Sol Duc Hot Springs recreation park. We hiked the Sol Duc Trail from the parking lot to the Sol Duc Falls taking shots of the moss-covered trees and fern foliage along the way in. We got our best shots of the cascading tiered waterfalls from the high bridge that crosses over the river and along the other side of the bridge looking back at the falls. We headed back to Port Angeles stopping at the Storm King Ranger Station and hiking the 1.5-mile round-trip trail to Marymere Falls for some more waterfall shots and of course, more shots of the moss-covered rain forest landscape on the way in. Day 06 - Today, it was a short road trip to the Lake Crescent Lodge located along the southeast shoreline of Lake Crescent. We hiked the short 0.5-mile round-trip loop Moment in Time Trail highlighting the time period from an old growth forest to now a developed public protected recreation area. It was back to the hotel for a 2:00-4:00 pm photo critique (8 images) followed by a farewell group dinner at the Crabhouse Dining Room at the hotel. It would be our last evening together. Day 07 - Our last outing starting at 5:00 am was back again to Hurricane Ridge, this time for a sunrise shoot looking south with the rising sun highlighting the snow-covered mountain peaks in the distance. We were fortunate this time as the morning skies were mostly clear with some low fog still on the ground, and we finally got some pretty good shots of the Olympics. We headed back to the hotel for a 10:00 - 12:00 am final slideshow presentation submitting our top 12 images for a final show-and tell. The instructor wrapped up the workshop by thanking all of us for our patience and cooperation, and we all agreed, it was a really an excellent photo opportunity to capture the foliage and majesty of the Olympic National Park Rain Forest. We all wished the weather had been better, but it was a rain forest after all.

GALLERY 06 - 2013 - Olympic National Park Coastal Beach & Forest Trail Photos - 1-2 June, 2013.

Introduction - Following the RMSP Olympic National Park Photography Workshop, I extended my stay at the hotel for another 2 days to go out on my own and visit some new areas that the instructor had recommended as the weather was getting better now. Day 01 - Got an early start and headed west along the coastal Hw 101 to the Clallam County Salt Creek Recreation Area and the adjacent Tongue Point Marine Sanctuary and restored former WWII Camp Hayden coast artillery bunkers that were located within the county park. I spent most of the day there exploring the hiking trail along Salt Creek emptying into the tidal flats and the numerous tide pools located all along the Tongue Point Bay coastline. I hiked the steep Bluff Trail up to the Camp Hayden site shooting the native flora and fawny all along the trail. The former bunkers and gun emplacements had been restored after being decommissioned in 1956 when the artillery emplacements along the Strait of Juan de Fuca became outdated and unnecessary. Day 02 - Went back to the Sol Duc Hot Springs recreation site and hiked the trail to the Sol Duc Falls to spend more time there and to shoot the falls from some different angles. On the way back from the falls, I took a break and stopped in the Hot Springs Recreation Center for a bite to eat and spent some time in their gift shop. Most people come there and pay a fee to soak in the natural mineral hot spring pools which are supposed to have medicinal health benefits. After Sol Duc, I headed south along Hw 101 to Rialto Beach for some late afternoon and evening shots hoping to get some sunset shots as the weather had improved significantly. The beach is known for its giant old growth tree stumps strewn all along the beachhead with their huge root stems intact that had been washed down from the three rivers that converge here emptying into the bay, the Quillayute, Sol Duc and Bogachiel Rivers. There are also giant sea stacks rising here and all along the Pacific Coastline. Well, I got lucky this time and finally got my sunset shots as it was about time.

(1) Salt Creek Recreation Area & Tongue Point Marine Sanctuary - The 196-acre Salt Creek Recreation Area located just 15 miles west of Port Angeles along coastal Hw 101 and then north along Hw 112 was purchased from the Federal GSA after being surplussed at the end of WW II and the former Camp Hayden coastal artillery unit was deactivated. The recreation park maintained by Clallam County contains 90 designated campsites of which 72 are located along the high bluffs that overlook the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Vancouver Island, B. C. The rocky basalt tide pools at Tongue Point are included within the Marine Sanctuary Area, but posted and authorized beach recreation activities include tide pooling, scuba diving, kayaking, wind surfing and bird watching. (2) Camp Hayden - In 1941, temporary shore battery installations were constructed

e Olympic National Park Photo Workshope, located at 2727 3rd Street, W, Missoula, Montana is a third-generation, family-owned business that has been in operation in Montana since 1896. (ref: www.carasnursery.com, About Us/Home).oastline
