Introduction - A total of 5 people signed up for he 12-day 2020 Kenya African Photo Safari held from the 5th thru the 20th of February, 2020 conducted by professional photographer Jeff Wendorff. It was my third trip with Jeff to Kenya and I had talked one of my Australian photographer friends that I had met on a previous Borneo photo workshop to join our safari group as his specialty was wildlife and he had never been to Africa before. Well, he talked his boss, another Aussie, into coming and both were glad they came….exceeding all their expectations. The Safari began with: Day 01 - Arrival by flight into Nairobi IAP late at night, met by Game Watchers Staff and spending the first 2 nites at the privately-owned Manchusla House B&B located on the northern outskirts of Nairobi before heading into the bush. Day 02 - The first full day included meeting the group at breakfast and visits to nearby animal conservancies to include the Giraffe Centre and Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, where we were treated to a private showing of the baby elephants. We were able to roam among them under the close eye of the local training staff as they were taking a mud bath. Days 03, 04 and 05 - After breakfast, we flew SSE from Nairobi Wilson AP to the Selenkay airstrip arriving at Amboseli National Park located near the base of Mt Kilimanjaro. After transport by jeep to the nearby Porini Amboseli Safari Camp, greetings by the camp staff and unpacking in our assigned tents, we headed out for the next 3 days on jeep safaris photographing the numerous herds of elephants and large flocks of birds that populate the marshlands of the Selenkay Conservancy and Amboseli National Park. During our stay, we visited a local Maasi Village to experience their native culture and traditions. Day 06 - On Day 06, we departed by local flight back to Wilson AP for our departure heading NW to the Masai Mara Olseki airstrip and the Ol Kinyei Conservancy, one of the 16 conservancies that make up the Masai Mara National Reserve. Upon arrival and greetings by the Porini Mara Safari Camp staff, we traveled by jeep to the camp site for a refreshment greeting, tent assignments and a sit-down camp lunch. Days 07 and 08 - The next 2 days included game drives into the spectacular 18,700-acre yellow-barked Acacia tree-lined rolling hillsides surrounding the banks of the Laetoli River. Big cats, folding wildebeest, zebra herds, hippo pools, giraffe, large herds of antelope and cape buffalo seem to appear everywhere you ventured with a traditional evening sundowner at the end of each day to celebrate the days adventures. Day 09 - On Day 09, we departed by jeep for the 3-hour drive NW to the Porini Lion Safari Camp located in the 94-bed limited wilderness Olare Motorogi Conservancy. It’s located just NW of the main Masai Mara Reserve along the seasonal Ntiakatiak River and maintains the same herds of grazing wildlife, which attracts the big cats and accompanying hyena, jackal and vulture scavengers. Days 10, 11 and 12 - We experienced in the next 3 days exciting wildlife and bird photography events to include a kit cheetah cuddling up to its mother, a large (20+) lion herd with a dominant black-maimed male dragging their recent zebra kill by its neck over 500 ft right in front of us in our jeeps into the nearby bushes to keep the surrounding jackals and vultures at bay while the rest of the pack finished their feeding in privacy. Just when you thought you had viewed the highlight of the trip, the next event was even more spectacular. “It just kept getting better” became the catchword of our entire safari. We all were thinking it couldn’t get any better than this, but it would. Then Jeff would say…..”that’s why I keep bringing my “JU-JU” (i.e., MOJO) jacket (which has never been washed, so he claims)…as another magical moment will just be around the corner.” Day 13 - Our adventure ended with a return flight back to Nairobi for a half-day stay at a local hotel located near the international airport for our late return flights back to the USA or continued destination.
Event Summary - The gallery contains photographs taken each day of the safari beginning with a schedule of that day’s activities, a map of where we went and photographs of the participants showing field conditions encountered, wild animals in their natural settings and just how close we got to the wildlife in our safari jeeps. The gallery provides a documentary of where we went, what we did and the photo opportunities each of us experienced. The six of us shared two jeeps, providing ample room to scoot about to either side and we had plenty of room to spread out all of our photo gear. All of us want to thank Jeff Wendorff for opportunity to be there to experience the excitement of wild animals and to photograph them up close and personal. We would also like to thank the Game Watchers Safari guides and drivers, who got us into position based on the best lighting conditions, safety considerations and intuition as to what the wildlife would be doing next so that we would be in the best position for a photographic moment. We were very, very fortunate indeed (some would say just good mojo) and; absolutely, we all have got the photos to prove it…..JDT
